Monthly Gay Night Out in Maplewood/SO Edited

Oct 21, 2007 at 3:22am
Very tempting ... I made a 39% (pretty good for a monogamous straight girl, right?) But I fear that if too many of us who live/lean straight crash this it wouldn't be fair and might stifle the goals that the OP mentioned. I refer to the portion quoted below: Posted By: omoh - Why do I want to be around a group of gay people? Well, because I'm gay and many gay people have experienced coming out or discrimination experiences that can give something in common to even the most different types of gay people. And gay people are not homogenous, so I would expect a wide range of diversity in such a group from male to female, from black to white to brown, from young adults to seniors, from couples to parents to singles, from conservatives to liberals, from rock climbers to knitters and more. It can be a lot of fun to be in a group of gay people and very enlightening (just joking and no offense Old Stone. Sorry, I know you've been picked on a lot and I have really enjoyed some of your threads) So, for now I think that I will send good wishes to all of you and hope that it turns out well ... and maybe down the road when it is a going concern, I'll join you guys sometime.

Any knitters out there? Edited

Sep 26, 2007 at 5:11am
There are a group of knitters that are left over from the Pen and Jen days that now knit at Net Nomads on Saturday am starting about 11-11:30a. until we need to return to our lives or the place closes. But feel free to stop by. I understand the ease of Mergele's suggestion of knotting but never a good idea. have you stopped by Knit Knacks and asked for some assistance or where ever you purchased the yarn. Hope this helps. cecilia

Oh my god, this is hilarious. Sad and disgusting, but hilarious. And BTW, I LOVED "fetishistic knitters"! Take pics of the backs of their cars with the license plates clearly showing and post it here just for fun.

When I was walking my dog the other night I saw a used condom out by my curb. Oddly, there's also a pair of knitting needles out there too. Fetishistic knitters? Naughty grannies? Stich 'n' Bitch taken to a whole new level?

Looking for Quilters in Maplewood Area Edited

doulamomma, Thank you for your comments and suggestions. I know that my wife contacted the knitters' group, which was very welcoming, but their interests were different for the most part. So far, she has been frustrated in her attempts to just find a group of like minded people, who are interested in meeting during the day to simply quilt and exchange ideas. In other places we have lived, she has been actively involved in groups who meet once a week to just quilt and learn from each other. All the groups she has come across so far are either so far away or meet only in the evening.

knitizen, your store sounds wonderful and I'm not even a knitter (yet) but I play one on TV. I just signed up for your email list. I hope your knitting class offerings include some evening and/or weekend times. Best of luck in your new venture. There are tons of knitters who post on MOL. I'm sure they'll be in touch as soon as you open.

Loud Talkers! Edited

There is this guy that I see every morning on the train (the early one, not the one with the knitters - love ya girls and guys) and he has this very charming, very flirtatious conversation every morning. Every morning he speaks (not wispers) sweet nothings to the person on the other end. Every so often they talk about mundane day to day things but more likely it's outright flirtation bordering on phone sex. Now I also know his wife and I ran into her about six months ago. I told her how great it is that her husband is still so into her that he calls her every morning from the train. She says: He would never call me from the train! He knows I would strangle him if he would wake me up at 7 AM! I got my guy trained!! OUCH :shamed::shamed::shamed::shamed:

I'd like to venture forth with a train etiquette question that's related. One morning, I sat in the front-most car of a Hoboken train with 4 other Maplewood women who knit. We were all chatting (no cell phones) primarily about the knitting. It was pretty crowded, but no one was standing. After a bit, a woman in a seat behind us, asked them/us to please keep it down as she was trying to read. One of the knitters apologized, and we all fell silent and stopped talking altogether. So, my question is this: is there an expectation that NJT cars are "quiet" cars a la Amtrak? Only the first car? During commute? For me, when I sit alone I pretty much read -- but that's my choice. If I'm sitting with someone else, we often chat -- not at the top of our lungs, or about anything personal. I thought the women who requested us to keep it down had unreasonable expectations. Really, no one was hollering, or regaling the others with personal escapades, etc. This has been bugging me since it happened a few months ago.

Ok, camnol, now I'm going to put in a shameless promotion for the knitter's group that meets at Here's To The Arts on Tuesdays from 6 - 8. ;-) Novice knitters welcome - learn to make a sock, so you never have to be aggravated when standing in line again!! (I won't be there tomorrow though, as little C needs her mom on Halloween. :-) Oh, and, knitters are NEVER wrong. We don't make mistakes, we just unintentionally adapt the pattern.

"I'm going to amend lydia's suggestion to bring a book - bring a sock!!" LOL! CLK, I was going to say the same thing! It's nice to live in a town with so many knitters! ;-)

I'm going to amend lydia's suggestion to bring a book - bring a sock!! Knitters everywhere know that you should keep a sock-in-progress with you at all times, to take out and work on whenever you get stuck in a line, waiting for a doctor's appointment, etc etc. I finished a good couple of inches on a sock this summer when the camp bus from the driving range, with my golf-lovin' daughter on board, was over an hour late (stuck in traffic). Without that sock I'd have been spitting nails - with the sock, I was as happy as, well, as a knitter working on a sock.

mbb, I'll answer for Vineeta - we meet at Here's To The Arts on Baker Street in Maplewood, Tuesdays from 6 - 8 PM. There is no formal instructor, but we definitely help each other out. We have a range from beginners through to very experienced knitters. The more experienced onces coach the beginners, and also coach each other on techniques that one knows & the other doesn't. Again, I can't say it enough - all are welcome!

What kind of yarn is it? You could bring it to Here's To the Arts on Tuesday from 6 - 8 and see if anybody wants it. We have a weekly Stitch'n'B**** that meets there. Or, as honeydo suggested, donate the yarn to the seniors but come to our group anyway. Knitters, crocheters, spinners, dyers, etc are all welcome. Just show up ... no need to RSVP to anybody.
