Should Bruce Play for Chris Christie? Discuss ... archived

Most Sprinsteen songs that I know (the ones that aren't about cars) describe NJ (or many of its towns, at least) as a dump. (It's a town full of losers; It's a death trap/it's a suicide rap). Yet we're all soooooo proud that we come from the same state as him.

But he's also exhibits a romantic, sensitive streak:

"You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright."
"We're gonna take that little brat of yours and drop her off at your mom's"
"Got a wife and kids....I went out...and I never went back."
"The door's open but the ride ain't free."

And while it's been noted that "Born in the USA" is actually a protest song (kind of does to the nation what his earlier songs do to NJ), I have to point out that the battle of Khe Sanh was fought against the North Vietnamese army, not the Viet Cong. But I guess "Fighting off the People's Army of Vietnam" doesn't roll off the tongue as well.

Interesting story to follow: does Bruce play for Christie? If not, why not? If so, what does playlist look like? Hmmm.

Who cares, Bruce has jumped the shark. And don't get me started on Bon Jovi either. Flame away.

Regarding Mr. Springsteen - Huh?

Regarding Mr. Bon Jovi - He sort of "jumped the shark" when he started out, but that's just imho.

Posted By: FlyerzFanf Christie is serious about cutting costs, here's his first chance: forget the ceremony, forget Bruce or any other performer, and give the oath of office in the governor's office.
exactly..

Lots. Also, some of his patter at live shows is political. Here's an example:

Another: Just the first 1:20.

I don't get your point. got any more videos?

Well, there you go. He can sing "This Land is our Land" for Christie's inauguration.

people seem to have forgotten what a loyal Bushie Christie was. I wonder what he thought of this obviously anti-Bush tune:

I wouldn't know how loyal Christie was to Bush personally. However, one is expected to be loyal to the person who puts the food on your table. Also, Corzine as senator did approve of his appointment.

As for the anti-Bush tunes from Bruce. Maybe Chris doesn't care, maybe he's beyond that type of pettiness. Not everything is or should be a black or white struggle to the end.

On election night, when I entered his hotel suite, I was that person. Because of some weird hate mail after a TV appearance — I made the mistake of admitting to Sean Hannity that I voted for Barack Obama — I decided not to publicly support either candidate, even backing out of a fund-raiser Chris and I were hosting together.

Chris didn’t look at this as a betrayal. He understood my problem. When I entered the hotel suite on election night, he saw that I felt awkward and, as he did so many years ago on that baseball field, my roly-poly friend rushed over and made me feel welcome.

Christie was a Bush "Pioneer" and his top campaign fundraiser in NJ. That's pretty loyal. And there's nothing wrong with a Republican being a loyal Bush supporter. But he was a loyal Bushie for sure.

Yes, in 2000 before most knew what Bush was really like.

So being a pioneer in 2000 is a crime?

We know Christie is a lot more conservative than Corzine but why Bush has to be dragged into this now is beyond me. You remind me of the conservatives who are still whining about Clinton.

how you interpret any of that as "whining" or my implying it's "a crime" is beyond me. I'm just pointing out that Chris Christie was not only a Republican, but as counsel for the Bush campaign in NJ, he was an insider. and wondering what he thought about Springsteen's very vocal criticism.

sheesh.

By the ultra-leftist Woody Guthrie? Notice how many times we didn't hear this song after 9/11 while we were dusting off every patriotic tune we knew?

Absolute agreement here: Republicans need to own Bush as theirs and to count each returning Iraqi vet, dead or alive and damaged, as his.

"I'm a war president."
Yes you are, W. Yes you are.

Speaking as a "Bush Guy" that is a great song. One of the best on the album.

Vandalay:

It can be tough being right but loving rock. I remember my former brother in law, a very conservative Republican, loving Bruce Cockburn but hating his lyrics. Made for some interesting internal dissonance!
