You might find this link helpful. Based on it, Wyoming seems a good bet from a non-cloudiness standpoint.

Weather website predicts some clouds for Casper. Again, I will make a decision on Friday.
We are lucky to have friends to visit in Independence, MO. They have a big property which I expect won't get crowded. It's in the path of totality, and don't you just love that term?
It's a great term when not used in the context of ICBMs.

The idea is to decide where to go to see this. I get one chance in a lifetime..... don't want clouds to ruin it. So I selected two places. One in Wyoming and the other in Illinois. I made reservations about 150 miles away from each of the closest cities and I will cancel one of them on Friday and drive to the other one.
A choice is Casper Wyoming. Hotel.com (Expedia) offers two rooms left in the entire city. They are both going for $1,000 + on August 20th. Weather channel predicts there is a 20% chance of rain and cloud cover over Casper on 8/21. Sad for the people who show up if the city is cloud covered.
I reserved a room in Rapid City from where I can drive to Casper.
