Maplewood pool

Swim diapers and rubber diaper covers are not the same. I don't know if the pool requires diaper covers for the baby pool.

I have also seen the occasional baby in a regular diaper, not hard to miss when you see how big they swell up in the water.

Any kid with a regular diaper should be removed from the pool immediately. That's obnoxious and unsanitary.

Always one to complain when warranted, I say the pool is a great deal and the fees have not gone up for three years, last to cover some needed renovations and the new water slides. The pool is also self-sustaining, funded only by fees, with no tax money.

Agreed.

I have to admit the water was pretty chilly last year when the pool opened on Memorial Day weekend.

But given what's happening outside my window right now, I'd welcome a chilly pool on a warm day!

Might be a cold start again this year... according to a graphic in the WSJ this morning, last March avg temp was about 38 degrees, and so far this March its just about the same. By comparison, March 2013 averaged 40, and 2012 averaged 51(!).

edited for spelling

So can a toddler in a bathing suit with pool-diaper be allowed in?

A toddler or a baby with a swim diaper is allowed in both the training and baby pool at anytime. Never in the main pool.

But a rubber diaper, on top of the swim diaper is not required? Do swim diapers prevent exposure to coxsackie in the event of #2 by the infant?

I am sorry but I just don't have a week to spend at home with my kid again. We may need to skip the pool until he is old enough to use the main pool.

Even a rubber diaper won't be hermetically sealed unless you tape the waist and legs to the baby.

^^this. Rubber diaper covers only prevent formed stool from escaping. But as you know, many infants and toddlers have less than formed BMs that can easily escape through a diaper cover, even with elastic.

Maplewood vs. South Orange Town Pools, what are the pros/cons for each? Any little known facts/secrets?

So what do toddlers go in?

people in south orange think the so pool is superior cause we have a better layout with more grassy areas to sit along with lower fees.

people in maplewood think their pool is better because the pool is better.

The main point, which may render the rest moot for you, is that you generally don't have an option to choose one over the other -- aside from some limited reciprocity between the two, neither is open to non-residents of the respective town.

S.O. pool is much cheaper because it is subsidized by the town, and the person who donated the land for it put in a restrictive covenant that effectively caps what they can charge for it. Maplewood is a much larger pool complex with a more extensive diving pool and waterslides. Generally better food options too. The S.O. pool has the advantage of being in a larger park complex so it is next to a playground and tennis courts. Maplewood pool has a LOT of rules that, while understandable, can sometimes get annoying. Not sure if S.O. is similar in that respect. Those are just some of the differences off the top of my head.

They are both excellent facilities, albeit with some differences. I really don't think that the pools should be a deciding factor in deciding where to buy a home. However, knowing about the differences makes sense for those limited number of people who may be eligible for that limited reciprocity and have reason to consider it (such as those with children in a school with classmates from both towns.)

I still wish that the two pools would work out an "automatic guest pass" system where a member of one pool could show that pool's badge and be admitted to the other town's pool. I really don't think this would add much, if any, actual cost to pool operations and would eliminate paperwork, etc. involved in administering reciprocity. And it would be especially nice for those children who attend schools that straddle both towns. (Or for others of us ... many! ... who have friends in both towns and would like to go to the pool together.)

Where is the line of demarcation and who is allowed entry to both?

Line of demarcation is the border between the two towns -- again, membership is based on residency. I'll let someone else explain the reciprocity deal (although you could probably find it on the township's website).

We're new to Maplewood this year and are excited about joining the pool, but now I'm wondering if we should hold off until our toddler is older. Would love to hear from other parents what they think. Hoping to make a decision today.
The pool brochure indicates, under the "Activities" section, that the baby pool is only open Tuesday-Friday from 9-11, and it only opens beginning July 11. Is this true, or are they referring to some specific baby pool activity that runs during those hours? It's just my wife, me, and our 18-month old boy. Many days it would just be the boy and me, and not likely in the window stated above. It doesn't seem worth the membership if we're only granted access to the baby pool, which will be closed much of the time we end up there.
I've seen some say toddlers are allowed in only the baby pool, and others say just the training pool and baby pool. The gentleman I spoke with at the Dept. of Rec. said we could use all three pools, but wasn't sure, so he transferred me to the director where I left a message. Obviously, my son would be in proper swim diaper and under supervision at all times.
Ultimately, I'd like to hear from other dads or moms with more experience if they think it's worth joining with just a toddler in tow. I assumed we'd need a family membership, but it looks like guest passes are only needed for kids 3+. Could we get away with just a couple membership?

No one has access to both pools.  Under the reciprocity deal - you can buy a membership to either pool and the cost is the same as a membership to the Maplewood Pool.  For example:

Maplewood family buys a membership to the South Orange Pool; the cost will be the same as they would pay to the join the Maplewood Pool; family will only be allowed to go to the South Orange Pool because that's where they purchased their membership.

South Orange family buys a membership to the Maplewood Pool; the cost will be the same as Maplewood families pay to the join the Maplewood Pool; family will only be allowed to go to the Maplewood Pool because that's where they purchased their membership.

ETA - reciprocity deal is available to ALL residents of Maplewood and South Orange.  It has nothing to do with where you live in the towns or what schools your children attend.  There are only a limited number of these memberships available, so if you are going to do it...sign up quickly.

@ tweezer - The Maplewood pool complex has 4 pools - baby, training, big pool and diving tank.  When the pool complex is open to the general public, ALL the pools are available for use, including the Baby Pool.  BUT, there are times when only some of the pools are available and this is typically in the early morning before the complex is open to the general public.  There are children's swim lessons taking place in the training pool between 9-11am during the week.  What the brochure doesn't communicate very well is that during those swim lesson times, the Baby Pool will be open.  So look at those hours as "extra hours" you can take your toddler to the Maplewood Pool. Hope this helps.

Yes, that clears it up. Thanks!
