Random landscape - 1758hrs (just before sunset), 26 August 2016, at Lake Mungo - part of Mungo National Park, outback New South Wales.

The lake is the central feature of Mungo National Park, and is one of seventeen lakes in the World Heritage listed Willandra Lakes Region. Many important archaeological findings have been made at the lake, most significantly the discovery of the remains of Mungo Man, the oldest human remains found in Australia, and Mungo Woman, the oldest human remains in the world to be ritually cremated.

Speaking of the children's television show, Bluey, which I mentioned a few posts back, this story has also come to light -

A follow-up to the Lake Mungo image I posted up thread ...

There is argument as to how the remains of both Mungo Lady and Mungo Man should be treated.

I wonder if Mungo Man was the inspiration for the name Mungo Jerry, a character in cats. Something to ponder.

 Apparently not.

The group's name was inspired by the poem "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer", from T. S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mungo_Jerry

There might be a very tenuous connection with the 'Mungo' part of the name, but I really doubt it.  Eliot died a few years before the remains of both Mungo Lady and Mungo Man were discovered.

This article explains more about the cat poems. https://www.bl.uk/20th-century-literature/articles/an-introduction-to-old-possums-book-of-practical-cats  Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer are related to Eliot’s love of British music hall entertainment, shown in the link within that article, https://www.bl.uk/collection-items/london-letter-by-t-s-eliot-published-in-the-dial

I also found this on the name:

Origin of Name

Lake Mungo is named after the Mungo sheep station which was created in the 1920s when the land in the area was subdivided for soldier settlement. The property, owned by the Cameron Brothers, was named after a picture of St Mungo they had seen at St Mungo's Church in Scotland. St Mungo is the patron saint of Glasgow.

Thank you for the link.

I really like the Lake Mungo area - I visited there a couple of times.  It's an absolutely fascinating place!

Well glad we cleared that up! I knew the name was from T.S. Elliot's poem but had not brushed up on the timeline of Australia's anthropological discoveries.

I'll turn my attention from roos to human remains!

The late John Clarke was a New Zealand-born writer and satirist who spent a lot of time in Australia.

He would have turned 73 today (29th July)

I can't quite work it out.  I think it may be some cross-talk (print-through?) in the recording tape, artifacts from the recording process, or just some background noise (leak-through) from the studio control room.

The RN Science Show's Robyn Williams was the interviewer.

Do you remember when 'hanging up' meant returning the handset to its cradle?  And if you were angry with someone, you might have done it with some violence!

Now all you do is press the 'off' button, and if you try to do it with any force, you risk jolting the phone out of your hand and damaging it when it falls to the ground.

There is at least one positive from modern cordless or cell- (mobile-, in my part of the world) phones: no cords to tangle.

This must have been a nightmare to knit...

Oh very clever!  snake What an inspired textile artist, to visualise this installation!

Have you noticed that each of these birds has a picture of a seagull on their face?

I hear that ABBA and Elvis Costello will be touring together.

It's being billed as the ABBA and Costello concert.

I wonder who's on first.

Apparently, they won't play in Chelsea.
