You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it archived

When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

These are from Winston Churchill.

Perhaps they should be required reading for those seeking elected office this November.

1. As a card carrying member of the ICS, I don't recall those words. Are you sure they are of the great man?

2. How did you come to specialize in these thread initiations?

It's on facebook. It must be true.

Churchill believed in the privilege of class, the British Empire and God, most likely in that order. And he was a good writer. The only thing I really wonder about Churchill is how the Empire would have fared without him - just fine, I believe, but who knows.

You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.

You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.

Ninety percent of life is just showing up.

Worth repeating:

You can fool some of the people all the time.

Why should Americans look to Winston Churchil for direction or inspiration with regard to our economic policy. Does anyone really want to follow the British economic model.... any british economic model.

Winston Churchill may have been a great wartime leader but he was not an economist. He was also the grandson of the Duke of Marlborough. He was a member of the British aristocracy, and his economic views certainly reflected that.

where's the sink button?

isn't it the same quote twice?

When People Quote the Same Quote Twice, They Are Trying to Make Their Posts Sound More Interesting and Important than they Actually Are but in Reality are Just Reinforcing their Image as Village Idjit.

That, my dear friend, is from lars.

"This quote appears frequently[5][6][7] on the Internet and is often attributed to Dr. Rogers with an incorrect date of 1931. In fact, the quotation is part of a longer sermon by Dr. Rogers' from 1984 in a larger series titled God’s Way to Health, Wealth and Wisdom (CDA107),[8] but it also appears as a passage in Dr. Rogers' 1996 work Ten Secrets for a Successful Family complaining that "by and large our young people do not know either the importance or the value of honest labor".[9]"

No idea why it's attributed to WC

Hey. Good Catch. That makes this thread twice as dumb as I originally thought.

and baileymac's post makes it even twice as dumb as that.

We may be approaching a dumbness singularity.

For the same reason right-wing websites and email chains pass around phony quotes attributed to Washington, Lincoln, etc., or stir up outrage based on a partial, out-of-context quote. It's Standard Operating Procedure.

"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. but it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."
...
Well, now time passed and now it seems
Everybody's having them dreams.
Everybody sees their self walkin' around with no one else.
Half of the people can be part right all of the time,
And some of the people can be all right part of the time,
But all of the people can't be all right all of the time.
I think Abraham Lincoln said that.
'I'll let you be in my dream if I can be in yours.'
I said that.
--Bob Dylan

"Be excellent to each other, and PARTY ON, DUDES!"

-- Abraham Lincoln

(As cited in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.)

One real, and true, quote is this from Margaret Thatcher:

"Socialist governments traditionally do make a financial mess. They always run out of other people's money. It's quite a characteristic of them."

Please note that I use the actual quote here, not the better know but not totally accurate popular version (which is pithier and really is true to the original quote), "The trouble with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money to spend."

approaching?
dude, we've already landed, gone through customs and are hailing a taxi.

hahaha broigus. You bring the bull- that is this thread to a new level.

Thirty-seven million Americans live under the poverty line. That’s one in eight people.

36 million people live in poverty.

So thanks for rooting for the wealthy against the common people. They're poor exactly because the wealthy are too rich.

uh oh.

You said the Truith That Shall Never Be Spoken.

Another way to put is that the poor aren't a problem of capitalism, they're a feature.

Greater BS has never been spoken. The poor are poor for many reasons but none of them have to do with the amount of money the "rich" have.

When I'm president, I'll point everyone to this thread when I remove social security and send all the seniors back to work, the lazy bastards.

no, i'm sure greater BS has been spoken.

I do believe someone on this board was arguing that there is no longer any racism in this country, maybe it was
no institutional racism, or some other absurd notion.

I cant remember who it was though.

Depends. If the government of a capitalist nation sees a high employment rate and middle class prosperity as an economic goal,
then the damage is minimized.

We have an unemployment rate of 9+ %, right? And the national debate is about whether to extend unemployment benefits,
and whether to extend the Bush tax cuts.

In other words, the elite are having a conversation that no one in the tent cities hears, or, if they do, cares about.
