Great turnout at yesterday's flu clinic held at Maplewood Town Hall.  There will be a second opportunity on Saturday afternoon.  If you are a Maplewood resident 18 years of age or older, haven't gotten a flu shot yet this year, and have no plans to get one through your doctor or some other source, consider coming to Maplewood Town Hall on Saturday, 11:00 am to 1 pm.  Shot is free for persons age 65 and older, $20 dollars otherwise.   I don't know why the town is not offering the extra strength flu shot recommended for some seniors.  I have posed that question on a recent thread started by Bob Roe on the subject.  If I receive a reply, I will cross post it here.

^^^ from Bob Roe's post on the flu shot thread:  "It is a judgement call whether to get the extra strength dose that is trivalent or the quadrivalent vaccine.  We choose the quadrivalent."

Reminder:  Repair cafe tomorrow at 2 pm at Morrow Church.  Bring your portable stuff that needs repair.  Experts will be there to help.

This from yesterday's Maplewood Seniors Advisory Committee Meeting.  This refers to Maplewood and South Orange only.  If anyone reading this knows of similar provisions in neighboring towns, please post that information here.

Are you concerned about an older neighbor or friend?  Maybe you haven't seen them in a while or notice they have a problem, but aren't getting help.  You can call the Health Department Monday - Friday 9 am to 3 pm. After hours, call the  police department's non-emergency number.  When you contact either  department please provide the information needed for that department to make an informed and immediate response.

Phone numbers to call:

Maplewood:  Health Department:  973-762-8120 x4300 or 4400; Police Department: 973-762-3400

South Orange:  Health Department: 973-378-7715; Police Department:  973-763-3000

This may seem Big Brotherish to some but it can be a lifeline to the senior who may be in real trouble.  Better to call than to have a friend or neighbor suffer unnecessarily.  Your call may even save someone's life.

Per Michelle:  There will be no senior bus transport to any of the local supermarkets this week.  Instead, she plans to offer transport to ShopRite on November 28th.  Since the town will be closed on both November 23rd and November 24th, anyone wishing to schedule for Tuesday the 28th should probably call on the morning of November 22nd to verify the Tuesday trip and sign up.

December/January edition of Olde News is now available on-line at the following link.

I just received the following email.  This is a good opportunity for seniors who live in a private home in Maplewood and are looking for for financial help in making repairs to their home.

Read about this wonderful opportunity.  The Maplewood Affordable Housing Program (MAHP) assists homeowners in the Township with eligible repairs or replacement of major systems including roof, electrical safety upgrades, heating, plumbing, sanitary plumbing, weatherization (energy efficient windows, insulation, etc) and/or structural repairs. Assistance is provided in the form of a ten-year, interest free, forgivable loan up to $20,000 per dwelling unit.  There is no interest charged. There is no monthly payment. The loan is forgiven after 10 years if the property owner complies with the program guidelines. There is no cost to apply and it does not affect your credit score.

CGP&H, a consulting firm specializing in affordable housing programs, administers the program for the Township. CGP&H’s professional inspectors work with program participants to identify needed repairs and to monitor construction completion.  The program has already renovated 53 homes in Maplewood with program funds. Why not see if you can get assistance too?

If you have additional questions, either email maryalice@cgph.net or call Mary Alice at 609)%20664-2781" value="+16096642781" target="_blank">609-664-2781.

Local general contractors are encouraged to get an application for construction opportunities at www.hip.cgph.net.

SOMA Two Towns for All Ages is proud to announce a two-month pilot program with Gogo Grandparent! South Orange and Maplewood Residents aged 65 and older will be given 4 free rides per month in May and June to try out this service.  Rides up to $10 are free – any ride or amount over $10 will be billed to the rider.  What will this offer mean for residents?  An expansion of transportation options.  GGGP can be used to take you where or when the senior buses don’t run.  You can use it to go to an evening SOPAC performance or weekend movie, to a doctor's appointment, an evening program at the libraries or shopping.  If the ride is more than $10, the difference will be billed towards the rider's credit card. From many addresses, the $10 credit can get you as far as Livingston Mall or can be applied to a longer ride, like to Morristown, with you paying the additional cost.  The details are:

  • Residents 65 and older in zip codes 07040  or 07079 will receive up to 4, one-way rides of up to $10 in May and another 4 rides in June.
  • Residents must set up their own account by calling 855)%20464-6872" value="+18554646872" target="_blank">1 (855) 464-6872 or online at www.gogograndparent.com, and have a credit card to put on the account.
  • Unused rides or monies cannot be rolled over to future rides.
  • Residents who already have a GGGP account are entitled to the free rides - GGGP will identify current account holders by zip code.
  • You can sign up and use GGGP at any time, but the 4 free rides begin May.
  • For more information, go to the transportation page on our website or come to one of the information sessions:
