Why would anyone criticize a group who reside in the neighborhood and do not want a liquor store in their neighborhood?
Not worded the way you want ? Listen to their opposition and maybe the truth is there ...maybe just maybe their sensibilities have a foundation even if you do not agree. The language may not be as sophisticated as yours would be but their points are to be well taken ..they do not want a liquor store in the neighborhood they have chosen to live in to raise their families
They do not want a store that they believe works against their values ..they may be correct . How about listening or helping ? Seems they want a family oriented business in their midst ....not one that they see as harmful to the values they hold.

There is no such thing as values based zoning except maybe innOcean Grove. And that is a good thing. Who's values get to decide? Yours? Mine? People who live on the block? If it were up to me I would not have let papa johns open- they have lousy pizza and the CEO holds political views I abhor. As a vegan do I get to veto the Polish Pork Store ? No. There is only conforming and non conforming use when it comes to matters like this. If a business opens that gives neighbors pause then neighbors can work with the township to make sure that the business is a good neighbor as was done by neighbors of 7-11 and is being done in response to the WaWa proposal.

I have a liquor store around the corner from me. One of the notorious ones. I have not seen any increase in violence or people hanging outside getting their drink on.

Anecdotal evidence aside, let's see some facts. A quick search of "do liquor stores breed crime" turn up as many that say it doesn't as say it does. This phrase, "Liquor Stores attract crime, like bees to honey, this has been the case in city after city." is inflammatory rather than presenting evidence to back it up.

Oh, and I agree with @mod. Conforming use and proper enforcement is what is needed, not empty storefronts, which by the way, also have been shown to breed crime...

You know, this sounds like a great place for the unicorn farm/fencing academy/greenspace.

Of the forty people protesting this, 38 will be buying their liquor there.

Or this cool children's center!

Don't block the craft beer store close to my house please.

And what is it with all the G-damn petitions in this town? Attend meetings and STRONGLY vocalize your concern BEFORE decisions are made, not after.

Armchair activism: I blame Facebook. Let's start a petition and share the heck out of it

Local petitions are for all the lazy people who didn't pay attention when they were supposed to.

When I win powerball I'm opening a Pawn/Bail Bonds/ We buy gold / We sell Vapes/ Check cashing / We sell "water pipes for tobacco use only" / Adult toys books dvds novelties super store directly next to the Popeye's I 'll also be opening. The olddealership across from Burgerking or the old Wyman ford used car lot could work perfectly for this.

"We want development and business on Springfield Avenue ..."

"Wait ... We don't want THAT ..."

A nice wine store with a good selection of craft beers very near to my home would definitely be a happy thing.

Just read the following on Facebook:
Dear Neighbors of Tuscan ProspectThe friends and families on the block of Prospect along Springfield are organizing a petition to oppose the proposed Large Scale Liquor Store on our block, as part of an appeal to the NJ State Liquor Board. Our opposition is simple.Firstly, we do not believe the Mayor/Township made any attempt to notify the community of the proposed Large Scale Liquor Store which we would have expected in a community like Maplewood prior to approval.Secondly, we simply oppose a Large Scale Liquor Store in a family oriented neighborhood filled with young children, what kind of message does that send.Thirdly, historically it has been proven that Large Scale Liquor Stores attract crime, like bees to honey, this has been the case in city after city.Currently we have approximately forty names on the petition, if you would like us to add your name, please email me your name and address. If you support the large scale liquor store in a family neighborhood, that is your choice, but our block does believe it is right.

How does a liquor store selling legal beverages send any message to young children?

Snapchat?

LOL!!!

I agree that an nice, well-stocked liquor store is fairly harmless for a family neighborhood. Then again, I happily drink a beer in front of my kids so I guess I'm part of the problem!

But seriously. My kids are learning from a young age that alcohol exists and is for grown-ups. I don't see anything wrong with it. And I don't think, as stated above, that "family values" really come into play with zoning and building. If it was a bar open until 2am I might have a different perspective, I'm not sure.

Agreed.

I live a block from the petition-inspired soon-to-be-liquor store, and I've no problem with it, personally. It's a free market, and liquor stores aren't against any town bylaws, so, er, yeah. I hope they've a decent selection of microbrews. oh oh

(I'm just thrilled that it's not another autoparts store, dollar store, or medial office. It's a shop that I might actually frequent!)

Popeye's Long John Silvers with a drive-thru hahahahaha

I don't get why those people are so worried. We have two liquor stores in the Village, without incident, and more importantly, we had a liquor store a block up, at Yale, for years, without incident. Also, The Maplechek store, just down the street offers all types of liquor without incident too. This new place sounds like it will be a quality store, otherwise, why open up in such a fancy location

And I white castle next door. No more driving to Irvington for my fix!

In all fairness, there was a robbery at gunpoint at one of the liquor stores on Springfield Ave (I think the Maplecheck, but not sure) a few years ago. But that seems to have been an isolated incident from what I've heard. You'll never be safe from all the loonies.

I'll take my chances. I want my nearby Lambrusco and craft IPA's.

Paging Helen Lovejoy!

Secondly, we simply oppose a Large Scale Liquor Store in a family oriented neighborhood filled with young children, what kind of message does that send.

Mrs. Lee is a wonderful woman she gets my business in a pinch. If this new place carries good wines at a reasonable price rather than ratgutthat's another story

I was wondering how this thread go so many posts on it since I last checked.

To sum up my opinion on the matter: LOL OMG WTF.
