Why does nobody want to buy classic furniture anymore?

Until about ten years ago no one would buy old mid century furniture.  In the 90s I bought 1950's chairs for law school at a garage sale  2 for $25.  I sold them recently to someone who is going to have them recovered, for $400.

Its just about trends.  Right now clean lines and minimalism is the aesthetic.   Truthfully I am getting tired of it already.    Close second is what I call "clean luxe" - velvets and traditional shapes with new colors and fabrics.  Crap I am now seeing 80's colors like dusty rose and sea foam green.   Soon the whole thing will change and we will back to busy, cluttered looks.  As our eyes adjust, we immediately start to crave something else.  Or is that just me...

@mtierney - when you're ready to sell the Knoll and Breuer, PM me please!

And you can always post on the MOL classifieds, of course.

Please message me or call me when you are selling your sticky furniture. I would like to see what your have. I have alwaysed loved it! thank you.

An update - The buyers of my home are going to take most of the Stickley furniture, except for two bedroom dressers, and they are also taking the Amish kitchen table and hutch. However, I can't seem to give away that Ethan Allen dining table and breakfront ... so I will end up taking a sledgehammer to them and carting them off to the Millburn dump ... unless someone wants to pick it up for free.

We have a beautiful Ethan Allen couch that used to adorn a Brooklyn living room, our first NJ livingroom and when we moved to this spot, a new house living room. We've moved it to a much smaller area over time but it's still beautiful. Our beautiful bed from The Door Store that is still in prime condition. These two pieces in total have lasted 20 years plus. George Jetson furnishings have a life span of maybe 4- 6 years depending on use; IKEA, even shorter.

What I have done is put it on the curb, just overnight, preferably when there is other bulk pickup. If it's still there in the morning, then it gets "recycled" a/k/a tossed.

Donate it instead The tax deduction will be more than you sell it for.

Thanks for the suggestions. I alrerady contacted Habitat for Humanity this morning, sent them photos, and waiting for their response. It takes them two days to evaluate and respond.

Some people have suggested Craigslist, but I am a bit wary to post on there, as some people have mentioned that people will jerk you around, come over, look at the stuff, and then not buy. I have a limited amount of time to wait at home for potential shoppers to check out my stuff. But, if I get a bit desparate, I might do Craigslist.

I already have an offer for all of my Stickley from a "bottom feeder" who is giving me 10% on the dollar.

Millburn will not pick up furniture curbside ... they will only pick up white goods. I want to donate everything, but none of the charities that I have called will pick up the breakfront, dining table/chairs, LazEBoy sectional, and my kids' pressboard furniture. Habitat for Humanity doesn't take breakfronts, and they will not pick up anything with a formica covering (not sure what kind of laminate is on my kids' furniture). I can pay a hauler to bring things to the Millburn Town Dump, or to save a bit of money, I can disassemble stuff so that I can fit things into my car and bring it to the dump in a piecemeal fashion.

If you are ready to give it away, why not try posting on the MOL classifieds? Also, if you are a member of the Millburn/Short Hills and/or SOMa swap Facebook page, I'm sure someone will come whisk it away for you in no time.

agreed. I try not to offer stuff for "free" though because a lot of people tend to be no shows, they just pounce on freebies. Instead I'll ask for a nominal dollar amount. That seems to work.

If you are interested in donating you can call Morris Restore  https://www.morrisrestore.org/

I called Morris Restore ... which seems to handle the donations for Habitat. They are the ones who will not take breakfronts and things with formica tops. They recommended that I call Catholic Charities and the Veterans.

The IRS would take exception to that.  (i.e. they would say that the deductible value is whatever you can reasonably expect to sell it for.)

Try the Salvation Army or Goodwill.

Hi. I sent you a PM and then read through the rest of the posts. Please e-mail me.

Facebook has a SOMA swap group - take photos and try there.   Especially the Amish kitchen stuff.  It is sad that our classic furniture will not retain its value, but I'd rather see my items go to someone who wants them (even if they can't afford what I think they're worth) than a "bottom feeder" type or a dumpster.

I have the same issue. I've been trying to sell a 7 piece, made-in-the-usa solid wood girl's bedroom set. I've tried SOMA Swap and Craigslist.  Nothing. Habitat for Humanity told me that they weren't taking children's furniture right now. My parents paid a lot for it and it's well made. It's sad.

To the people who have been telling me to join the M/SO Swap Meet group on Facebook ... I tried joining several days ago, but the admin still has not granted me access. So if anyone knows the admin, whose name is Stephanie Jackson-Jones, would you give her a gentle ping and ask her to let pending members into the group?

@GreenEyedChick ... same problem here. And the pressboard furniture is so thick and well-fortified that I think that it could survive a nuclear explosion!

Kristen Cook Tyler is the admin for Swap/Meet SOMa on Facebook.  You may be in the wrong group.

Thanks, Soorlady. I see the correct group now, the one with over 18,000 members. I applied to jon the group, and I hope that Kristen will accept me.

Your welcome, Kristen also runs house sales and could possibly help you in that area as well.

Kristen came over to my house to talk about an estate sale. However, the fact that the buyer of the house bought most of my Stickley means that I do not need an estate sale. Now to figure out what I want to do with all of the other bric-a-brac. If Kristen decides to accept me in the FB group, then I will start offering other stuff to the group.

The the Salvation Army came and took some furniture when we cleaned out my parents house.

I just placed an ad here on MOL for the two Stickley dressers. I am still waiting to be approved for the mSO SwapMeet group on Facebook. Thanks for all of your suggestions.

I placed an ad on Craiglist. Immediately, I had interest from a person, an elderly lady who wanted to buy the two dressers for her grandson. She was going to send me money through Paypal, and send a shipper to pick them up. The problem was it was one of those scams where they "overpaid" me on Paypal, and wanted me to send the dfifference to the shipper.

I am still waiting to be admitted to the M/SO Swap Meet group on FB. I wonder if Kristen is mad at me that I didn't use her for an estate sale?

Be careful, it happens here with MOL classifieds, too

Message me your real name and I will add you, if you don't have friends in the group she may not realize. I don't think she's like that..
