Where do your kids "Heely?" archived

The best places to do it are where the surface is nice and smooth. Not allowed at school. Sidewalks can be very bumpy and unsatisfying. Right now they're doing it mostly in my house, but once the floors are refinished at the end of the renovation, that will no longer be allowed. We've been to the "rink" at the park on Burnett and the skate place at the pool.
Costco when it's not crouded!

Sorry, but I hate heelys in public places, especially when worn by newbies...recently went to HersheyPark, where inexpert heely kids were a menace to all of the younger kids around them.

Best of luck in finding good spots!

I'm hoping that this fad will fade REAL soon. I wouldn't buy them for my kid although I told her that if she really wanted some, she could spend her own money. I guess she didn't want them that bad.

The Livingston in the early morning.

I guess I am behind the times. What exactly is a heely?

McCheesey
They are sneakers with wheels. You tip back on your heals and away you go...i

Believe me I'm not a big fan of the damn things either. But then I guess there were "things" my parents weren't crazy about when I was kid. I remember buffalo sandals. Mom wouldn't let me get pair because she was afraid I'd fall off and break my ankle.

Anyhoo, I don't like them in public spaces either. And there have been many times when I've told my kids no, you can't wear them to this place or that place, and then we get to this place or that place (one place recently was the Newark Museum) and there are kids on Heelys!

Luckily, my kids have gotten very good on them pretty quickly. Child #2 is already spinning in circles!

I would just love to find a place we can go in them and they can glide around to their hearts content. I kinda feel bad that Santa brought them, but there are so few situations where they can wear them

I'm totally crazy about them! I'm astounded by them. Seriously. It seems miraculous that kids can wear them and not break their neck. If there were adult sizes, I would totally buy them. (Wait-- ARE there adult sizes? What about 12 year old boys-- can they wear them?)

Oh, hey, they DO sell adult sizes..... Now are they actually worth $60.... my feeling is no.... Probably not considered very professional.

cicely, I believe there are adult sizes. I'm pretty sure I saw them when I was shopping for the kids. Modells in Livingston Mall.

Let all the kids heely down on Rt 22, or on the GSP.

So *that's* what those things are called!

I've been bumped into by plenty of heely newbies in department stores and saw one kid wipe out pretty badly at a Babies R Us (was relieved that he only took out a small display and not one of the many pregnant women there). I'd guess that this fad will fade like the Razor scooter.

My kids don't have them but I have noticed many a child having the best time with them in the mall while mom shops! cheese I guess any smooth surface is good...Pathmark, Target ect. It can be annoying to have them wheeling around to some but I have a high tolerance and patience with children and seeing them having a good time ALWAYS makes me smile.....oh oh

To all you who are concerned about public spaces (I agree, for the most part - saw kids in crouded Christmas season mall - uncool), note that I said Costco when *not busy* (that's been exactly twice) - and yes my kid is great on his - the one who is new skates with them only in our garage...I hold the wheels in my purse & hand them over only if it seems clear - if the rules are not followed they go back in my purse

My granddaughters came zipping through my front door and into the kitchen with them. They usethem in their driveway, and in mine. What I really want is those sneakers with the heels that light up in adult sizes.

...for those that let the kids use them indoors....don't they leave black skid marks on the floor? (:o

indoors at home I meant.

Glad to hear that your kids arent the ones threatening to crash into me or my stroller!

No black skidmarks, Corey.

I let my kid get them last summer with her birthday gift money. She'd been asking for over a year. The first day or two she was only allowed to use them in the kitchen and front hall. She quickly got her balance. She loves wearing them to the mall or Costco or similar places. They're not allowed at school but are okay in the afterschool program. So she will carry her wheels in her backpack sometimes.

As long as she's considerate about other shoppers I don't mind her wearing them in stores. Parking lots can be a little dicey because the control is not perfect. I personally watched her fall under a parked car several months ago when we were out at lunch. That aged me some for sure. And provided an opportunity to reinforce safety rules. Since then she is more likely to hold onto my arm in a parking lot and just coast. (Don't tell her that I still enjoy holding hands with her, how embarassing!)

She loves them and I love watching her ease with them.

Whenever we go out in public with them (which hasn't been often since Christmas) I've made clear they need to be very careful and watch where they're going and not crash in to anything or anyONE, or I will immediately take the wheels. I've also told them if anyone at our destination tells them not to do it, they will have to stop.

Went to Target early morning yesterday and allowed child #2 to wear his. He had a nice time gliding back and forth on the smooth floor in front of the registers and there was hardly anyone in the store, so no worries about him crashing in to anyone. Seems like a lot of folks get a kick out of seeing him glide around.

The other problem is that child #2's Heelys are too big because they don't make them in a size small enough for him. And there was no way I could buy them for #1 and not #2, so we had to go large. He seems O.K. for the most part when gliding, but they're too big to be worn as regular shoes.

I wonder about a roller rink. Would they let us in just to glide around?

And, nope, no skid marks. They don't even seem to be scratching. It's just the idea of it that kind of freaks me out.

I want the light up sneakers too! If I wore the ones with wheels I'd fall flat on my face!!!:rolling:

doula
I didn't realize the wheels can actually come off them for storage.

meand
I'm pretty sure Florham Park does not allow them.

Question to those whose children have these. Do you have your child wear a helmet when 'wheeling' with these sneakers?

I would say that heelys would be right in every place that Sam I Am eats green eggs and ham.

i've seen kids wearing them at the Launch and Grind class thru the Y. They were going down the ramps on them!
hey, Meand, on First nite right after we talked, my dtr came whizzing down the sloped floor and i saw a mother shaking her head in strong disapproval (embarrassing). my husband was mortified. he is always sure she is going to take out a senior (so far everyone is okay). she had some bad spills the first day, and one day when she put them half way on and then tried to run to a chair to finish the job and about broke her tailbone. i keep pointing out to her how the other kids seem to be gliding sedately around while she seems to be pursuing a trophy for some extreme sport. But that's how she rolls!!
we also encounter situations where we said it won't be allowed and then there are kids heelying.

I guess I'm a big meanie...I don't let my kids wear them anywhere except the driveway/neighborhood, or if we go to my parents' and they want to use them in the yard. I never even thought about them using them in the house (I make them take their shoes off no matter what). I rarely take them to the store but I think my oldest wore them once without me knowing and I was terrified. I have seen signs at various places that say "no heelys" so I didn't even think it was an option.

(Or at least not a safe, legal option. My kids will tell you I am overprotective!)

Dumb question, since we're talking about "fads": are roller blades around anymore?

BTW - I didn't know what they were until I looked at this thread.

Home Depot, Target, Livingston Mall, and oh, our empty dining room grin

Recently, I've seen moms pushing shopping carts with one or two kids on Heely's leaning on the side of the cart and rolling along.

Yes, GT, plenty of roller blades around. That's about all I see at the Florham Park rink anymore, although I think that they do still have the old fashioned "wheels on four corners" skates in their rental inventory also.

Re sizes, I don't have Heely's but I can wear a size 6 or 6 1/2 kids shoe just fine, so that's probably how I would buy them if I was in the market myself. (I wear a ladies' 8.) In fact, I buy lots of kids casual clothing (shirts, sweats, jackets, etc.) since you can often get stuff that is just as good for less money. The kids' sizes are getting bigger and youth XL (usually 16-18 or 18-20) is about the same as Women's Medium in many cases, so you don't have to be all that petite to take advantage of this.
