What's the deal with Manny's Weiners?

I'm a vegetarian so I can't partake, but I've heard good things about the Italian hot dogs at Dickie Dee's in Newark's North Ward on Bloomfield. Italian hot dogs are also different from Texas weiners (and not anything you'd find in Italy either) but worth looking at as a possible hot dog fix semi-nearby.

Have a friend who spent a year working in Europe. When he got home he insisted that his dad who picked him up at Newark Airport immediately drive to Rutt's Hut in Clifton for a "Ripper".

But he is NJ born and bred. As a native New Yorker when I hear "hot dog" I think Nathan's and Coney Island.

I like Mann's but Rutts is superior.

From Wikipedia (which is always 100% accurate):

The Texas wiener was created in Paterson, New Jersey before 1920[1]and in Altoona, Pennsylvania by Peter "George" Koufougeorgas in 1918[2] and originally called Texas Hot Wieners. The "Texas" reference is to the chili sauce used on the dogs, which actually has a stronger Greek cuisine influence due to the ethnicity of the cooks who invented it. It is considered a unique regional hot dog style.

that's really funny, it's authentic NJ Greek diner food!

And in Rhode Island they have been called "New York System" hot dogs since the early 1900's!

It all must have sounded so exotic back when the average Joe never traveled more than 20 miles out of his home town...

@Skadave - a Rochester native here; and I can't tell whether the Tahou's reference is a compliment or not ;-)

My kids and hubby love Manny's, so we go a lot of weekends, with mom dragged reluctantly along. I think it is okay for diner food, but why would I go there when I could go to Park Wood??

It is absolutely a compliment.  . I LOVE the Garbage Plate oh oh!

Manny's California Cobb Salad is outstanding, as is their Rueben sammich... For a hot dog, however, I'd head over to Five Guys, where they offer Hebrew Nationals, a much better choice than Manny's wieners.

BTW: Here's a view from the front window...

I'm told that the roses are Manny's personally (not just random plants put there for landscaping) and that he is very proud of them.  I did hear this second hand though, so take that with a grain of salt.

When my parents were young, they and my aunts and uncles would go to Rutt's Hut. That was in the 40's.  grin

Manny's has good food at reasonable prices; I've been an occasional customer for years.  They're very efficient at getting orders completed, and when I've been there, there are a number of contractors (maybe stopping in before or after a trip to Home Depot) and workers on the go who get takeout orders.  The food is always fresh, because they are so busy.

Every time I pass that place and see their signs I think:  I just can't get past the idea that "Manny's Texas Weiners" is where you'd go to meet Manny's mishpoche, the Weiner family, from Texas.  If I wanted a hot dog, I might go somewhere named "Manny's Texas Wieners" though.  Or maybe not.  I'd probably still go to Nathan's.

But after reading this thread, maybe after all these years, I'll drop in there sometime and try something other than a hot dog, like a Cobb salad or a Reuben.  And who knows, maybe I'll meet one of the Weiners!  cheese

Perhaps Manny's Texas Weiners is a Dexy's Midnight Runners cover band?

...and that's one of my photos on the wall.

Manny was co-owner of the village diner in South Orange.  Manny and his son opened a large gorgeous diner off of exit 135 in Clark called Manny's (what a surprise).  Place has to hold at least 200 people and has plenty of parking and has a large party room.

Like Dinosaur BBQ? Even better, Mission BBQ? My only-fowl-eating sister and I went past Dino BBQ in Newark yesterday and she was enthralled by the smell. I think one in Maplewood would have my business.

Guys, the overuse of the word weiner is making me uncomfortable.

Everything's bigger in Texas.

Big Hat   No cattle

I'm having a VERY hard time not referencing a cattle prod or branding iron right now.

I wish ...

If they have good wieners in there, I will eat them.

We enjoy going to Manny's - but Hubby is from Cetronia so the hot dog King is Rocco's!  It is also the family business of Lee Iacocco.

Indigo Smoke didn't last very long. But it also wasn't especially good.

Hill Country BBQ (http://hillcountry.com/) is REAL Texas barbecue ... pretty much the same as what we had back in Texas, except for the prices.  (I got sticker shock the first time I went there in NYC, but it's SO good!)
