I'm only just catching up on this news - is this really her name, not a pseudonym? (Poor darling, sounding like a raffle junkie all her life)
Yes, that his her name and I feel bad for her, because she was trying to do a good thing and now she will get five years in jail.

Thanks in part to Glenn Greenwald's publication screwing up and giving her away.

Nonetheless, it’s clear that there were serious mistakes made by both the Intercept and its leaker. It’s quite reasonable for the Intercept to seek confirmation that the document in question was real with third-party sources, and eventually the NSA. But revealing the Augusta, Georgia, postmark to the third-party source clearly helped the government build its case. Providing a copy of the report seems to have, in some way, added to the government’s pile of evidence. And the decision to publish the PDF with the tracker dots unobscured — especially considering the Intercept likely had no knowledge that Winner was the leaker, and she was already in custody — is a baffling unforced error from a site that hinges on being a secure place to send documents.

It seems to me that if any story has been under reported by the media it is this one about Winner.

What additional reporting would you like to see?

I have CNN or MSNBC streaming almost constantly on one of my computer monitors, of which I sit in front of for way too many hours . Think of that what you may, but I can't remember the last time I heard anything about Winner. If they covered her sentencing, it must have been an awfully brief piece, and was not in any kind of significant rotation.

Back in DC, the flag is back at full staff atop the White House since Trump didn't issue a proclamation on the death for McCain. Just when you think he can't get any smaller or more petty...

would it be usual in the US to offer a State funeral for a sitting Senator?

Here it would be, automatically. PM would have little say; either the Governor-General or one of the Parliamentary officials would be offering it, or in this case given the military background, Defence would step up. Family could decline, of course.

No. The last state funeral for a nonpresident was General MacArthur in 1964.

Lying in state is a separate matter. It still isn’t usual, but Daniel Inouye in 2012 and Claude Pepper in 1989 are among the senators who were honored in this way. (Similarly, Billy Graham and Rosa Parks are among those who “lay in honor.”)

Just when you think things couldn’t get more scary, it does.....

As school begins, here is a test for political junkies....

It's not a "test".  It's a demonstration, as explained at the end of the article:

"Clearly, it can be nearly impossible to know whether an ad or a post on Facebook is legitimate or a ploy by a foreign government to turn you against other Americans."

not as I saw it — you are rated by the results of what you perceive. Fail or pass. Difficult to spot in social media? Very much so. But, as is often the case now more than in the past, legitimate news reports are often no longer objective.

I quoted from the article, it's not what I "perceive" as the point of the article.  It was at the end, not the headline, so you may have missed it.

When I first clicked on this link, I only saw the comparison posts, one after another. WHen I opened it the second time, there was text between each comparison. None of that stuff about the Resistors was there when I first opened the page.

I confess I took the “test” myself and  long face I only had two of the four samples right!

Nohero, I believe one must always read the whole article before going to the last sentence.

I guess my issue with the test is that it gives you 4 sets of 2 ads and asks you to choose a fake one. In reality, I wouldn't click on any of those things, as they all have the Facebook equivalent of FWD::FWD::FWD::: written all over them.

On a similar note, the Trump campaign has posted a survey, directed only at his followers, all about media bias against the Trump Regime. Here it is if you feel like filling it in, though I imagine if this was in a court of law these questions would be considered "leading the witness".

https://action.donaldjtrump.com/msm-media-accountability-survey/

One question asks, "Do you believe that if Republicans were obstructing Obama like Democrats are doing to Trump, the mainstream media would attack Republicans?"

Of course I laughed my *** off.

Those are the type of "survey" questions that one sees in a fundraising letter.

Since I read the whole thing, which is how I got to the last sentence, I don't know why you imply otherwise.

Sorry, but your last comment sounded prickly to my ear.

Trump's Television spokesmodel, Rudy Giuliani, said that Trump will not answer federal investigators' questions, in writing or in person, about whether he tried to block the probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

What's Trump's line about people who refuse to answer questions?  Something about you'd answer if you were innocent, if I recall correctly.

another Brexit in the making? Swexit? https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/06/opinion/how-the-far-right-conquered-sweden.html?rref=collection%2Fissuecollection%2Ftodays-new-york-times

In my view, “the melting pot” approach to immigration when my parents’ families immigrated from Austria and Ireland in the early 1900s/late 19th century — while far from free of suffering — brought  assimilation and the opportunity to succeed in America — worked. What is happening now in Europe is forced acceptance of large numbers of migrants  — virtually overnight — whose homelands were obliterated.

Does Europe want to assimilate these refugees, or eventually return them to their countries of origin? Will it be a melting pot or a keg of dynamite?

A rather rosy view of American immigration. "Assimilation" took decades.

On a more amusing note, you will be removed if you don't play the part correctly.

in the mindset of iPhones, microwaves an crockpots, it must be difficult imaging working toward a goal might take decades for families to enjoy freedom for life.

Maybe not "overnight" but lots of people with lots of problems in a relatively short period.

http://www.crf-usa.org/bill-of-rights-in-action/bria-26-2-the-potato-famine-and-irish-immigration-to-america.html

Between 1845 and 1855 more than 1.5 million adults and children left Ireland to seek refuge in America. Most were desperately poor, and many were suffering from starvation and disease.

The population of the US in 1840 was about 17 million.

That represents a great many people over a 10 year span, including my grandfather’s family who left Ireland around that time to settle in New York . My father was born in 1888. However, what is happening in Europe now has millions fleeing there from other countries over a much shorter span of time.

Who will rebuild the Middle East? Will the displaced migrants return to their homelands given the promise of safety? That is not going to happen while terrorists and terrorism threaten Europe and the United States.

your description of the arrival of the Irish in this country is essentially counter factual to what really met them when they arrived. They faced exactly the same type of nativist backlash that today's refugees are experiencing. It dismay me how many of my fellow Irish Americans are more than willing to forget the bigotry their own ancestors faced, and heap the same sorts of abuse on today's immigrants.

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/immigrants-conspiracies-and-secret-society-launched-american-nativism-180961915/

thanks for sharing that fascinating link! If my short recap of my ancestry misled anyone, let me be clear. Immigrants of that era were literally dumped on our shores. As the article notes, charities helped -  but there were no city or government support systems in place.

These new arrivals came with  two big warning signs — they were Irish and Catholic!

But, assimilation was the key to finding the American dream.

In my opinion, the hyphenation of our American identity was not the way to go and could result in the Balkanization of this country.
