We just dropped the largest non-nuclear bomb ever on Afghanistan.

Why not ignore my question, if you do not want to answer?

I do not know if author, to whom your question was directed, is ignoring your question or if he s just otherwise engaged. I just figured that if you wanted to discuss WWII you might offer your opinion.

As for my view I have not thoroughly studied the period leading up to the US involvement but we only entered the War after we were attacked by Japan and I believe Germany then declared War on us before we declared War on her.

Here's the answer to your question.

All wars are bad.

Even if one's entry into that war can be justified to your moral sensibility.

It's still bad.

Because really, really bad things happen. Death and destruction. From beginning to end. Non-stop.

And the only thing approaching a good thing is that the worst thing is stopped from continuing.

MOAB uses gravity to fall to earth and is GPS guided to adjust it's path as it falls.

I believe MOAB is GPS guided. As for clumsy, I wasn't talking about accuracy, I was talking about delivery systems. Pushing it out the back of a cargo plane is pretty clunky and much easier to defend against than a more modern bomber.

This bomb is way too clumsy to try and hit North Korea with it. (and can you believe we're talking about attacking North Korea? Thank you Republicans.)

Back to Afghanistan, CNN is reporting that 36 ISIS fighters were killed by the blast. (seems to me to be a pretty low body count for the mother of all bombs, but I digress...)

Anyway, they can't possibly know this. If these guys were in tunnels, can you imagine the rubble that has to be sifted through to find out who got killed? There's no way they would know that now. Whatever body count they tell us in the near future is pure speculation/b.s. on their part.

Modern bombs are laser guided, so they do hit where aimed.  The question is whether the target is based on sound Intel.

So MOAB has no propulsion system, right?

What ever course correction capability it has must just be by its fins, which I imagine must be pretty crude.  But with a bomb that large, you just have to get close - pinpoint accuracy not a requirement.

some bomb porn

accurate to within 8 meters.  That will suffice.

May I ask where you got that data point from? I find that level of accuracy hard to believe.

ETA: never mind. I found a cite. I don't believe it, personally.

I think it is very believable.  I'm not a big fan of military spending, or incursions, but I read everything I can about military history and technology.  We spend a lot of money developing these things.

Knowing DJT's level of sophistication, why not just guess that he asked what was the biggest baddest bomb we had short of a nuke?

Note his evasive answer when asked who ordered the bombing.

His policy of giving the generals free rein allows for blaming them for any failure.

Yes.  He is a dangerous man.  He calls the generals instead of the diplomats.  In the long run that just makes things worse.

I guess we should be thankful that Jared isn't in charge of the military.

Every time he says "my military" I cringe.

OK. I cringe when he says anything. But this is worth two cringes.

I will defer to your expertise.

I also believe that accuracy is not out of the realm.

I remeber watching lazer guided 2000 pound bombs correcting their flight path by only their fins during the Gulf War in 1992.

That was 25 years ago (hard to believe.)  I hope the technology has progressed since then.

The first paragraph states that this is the 6th annual rotation (for training purposes), so it is not directed specifically against North Korea.

On the other hand, I wouldn't put it past DJT incompetence to get in deeper than anyone wants him to.

admittedly, this was arranged some years ago however the Port of Darwin is now owned by the Chinese. Yep we sold it to them a couple of years back, and now lease access to some parts (not all) back.

So if there's trouble with either China or N Korea, the Top End is a hot zone.

Especially with a blast radius of one mile.
