Username to real name requests

Understood about the F2F idea. Probably not safe for the time being. Oh, right. There's the whole COVID thing, too.

What about a zoom face to face?  All we would need is someone with a zoom account and a link sent to those interested.  Jamie has a file of email addresses so possibly needing to out yourself to register would not be an issue.

How many have your name?
Edited to add, like ml1, anyone who knows me outside MOL knows my name. And every year I put my real name to a specific event which I advertise here on MOL with my real name in the post. I’m really not hiding, I just don’t feel like changing my username to my real name.

you've got me beat.  There are only 3 of us with my name.

There are "two or fewer" people with my name, as per the link.  I hope it's at least 1 or more.

There are 4 people in the United States with my name.

299 people named jamie Ross- I know 2 of them- one lives in town- the other was a friend of a friend- lives in the City.

There are 26 people in the U.S. named Karen Marlowe.

My current husband, one or less.
My late husband, 2 or fewer. One of them is his son.
My first LTR, two with same name.
I guess I like unusual names. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Just looked it up. There are 4,345 people in the USA with my real name.Did not realize there are so many.

I don't really believe this, but that site says that there are only 7 people in the US with my first and last name.  (One is the wife of my husband's first cousin.)  I know that there are way more on Facebook than that, but I'm the only one with same first/middle/last, which is what I use there.

We used to have regular IRL or F2F gatherings. Those were a hoot.

If we were to do that now, we'd need a decent outdoor space -- even vaccinated, I'm wary of hanging out indoors in groups. I was imagining just a casual after work thing, maybe a sort of "standing date" -- eg Thursdays after 6, walking distance from the train, whoever is around and wants to join, either in SO or Maplewood.

The tent behind Miti Miti could work well for this. It’s extremely well-ventilated, with swamp coolers and huge fans now, and externally-vented propane heaters in the winter. Plus, the entrance is right off the Sloan St. Parking lot for drivers and directly across from the train station for commuters.

My apologies for the extra posts. The MOL server was sluggish and my iPad went berserk.

Many MOLers know that my real name is Bob Landau, but I'm not going to change it because there is a famous LA-based photographer, Robert Landau. In fact, I keep one of his books, Outrageous L.A., out in our living room, just for $hits and giggles.

Relative to this topic…

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/31/style/anonymity-pseudonymity-online-identity.html

I've often said that for all the hand-wringing that's been done over the years on MOL about anonymous users, I think people on FB are WAY nastier.  And they're using their real names. I rarely even comment in the FB SOMA Lounge if the topic is controversial in the least.  Or if I do, I realize I need to make my exit after one comment, because things there can escalate pretty quickly.

A lot of common assumptions about anonymity are complicated by the literature on how people actually behave online, as noted by researcher K. Nathan Matias. In studies, for example, anonymous actors tend to be more, not less, sensitive to group norms. More than half of victims of online harassment already know their harassers. While there is scant evidence that “real name” policies mitigate abuse, there is plenty suggesting that asking people to expose more private information can intensify it. Researchers have found that, in some contexts, the most aggressive commenters have been observed to be more likely to reveal their identities.

MOL was a safer space because it was actively and thoughtfully moderated

I never doubted your name was unique.

There is a German musician whose last name is one letter off mine but means the same thing.  As far as I can tell, he's the only other one. However, back in the 80's when I lived in Brooklyn, there was another, also in Brooklyn.  He was in his 80s at the time and was very curt with people when he got my calls.

I'm currently job searching. I KNOW people are googling me and being judgmental.

Good luck! They definitely look it up. Colleges do as well. When my niece was a senior in high school the counselor at the school googled her name and showed her all of her posts on social media and said that a lot of colleges are going to do the same thing.
