Train crashed into platform at Hoboken Terminal

Nightmare.

May want to consider a second sticky to organize and connect those needing a ride home tonight (and possibly in tomorrow) with people who drive in the area, since travel is going to be severely disrupted.

I am sure there are a lot of SOMA people who are going to need a way out.

That would be great!

And on that note, we have room for two people leaving from Harborside Plaza 5 at 5pm today heading to SOMA. We can drop off before or after we pick up our son from day care depending on where you are located.

Great idea. I just got offered a ride from Harborside today when I started a thread about bus directions from Newark. I plan to drive into Jersey City early tomorrow and park at Liberty State Park and Ride and can take a few people with me there and back.

As far as I know midtown direct trains should not be effected, so people commuting to NYC might need to make the trek up to penn to make it home for a bit...

We are fortunate to have multiple ways of going into/out of NYC by mass transit. Midtown direct train from Penn Station, 107 bus from Port Authority, PATH to Newark Penn Station then local bus (1, 25, 31, 70) to Maplewood or South Orange.

They will no doubt be VERY crowded. And I don't think they can add extra trains as they sometimes do out of Hoboken when there is a problem with MTD.

ETA - Perhaps there may be cases where they could add an extra car or two to some trains (?)

NJT has enough trouble in having enough train cars on a normal day, let alone adding more cars. I think that also might create a problem getting to Sunnyside Yards for them. I think we are all going to get up close and personal on our commute into and out of Penn Station for the next few months.

Of course, Christie was out of the state when this happened (they're not reporting where). But he is returning for a 2 pm press conference.

Please, let him just stay wherever he is.

Could they take cars from trains that normally are on the Hoboken line or are those incompatible? (I know that many of them look different.)

We have to get some alternatives for commuting NJ to NY now. This is non-negotiable.

Where did you get your statistics from, Donald Trump? Point is, if I don't have to stand, I won't, and I don't recommend it either. Experience speaks loudly to me.

If you think you know better, then do as you please. I really don't expect others to understand my thinking until they have had an experience also.

BTW, I have walked the streets of NYC as long as I have commuted and never been in an accident, not even on 9/11.

If you need to commute back to MAPSO I recommend checking with NJT for service on Midtown. Not hearing many trains passing through on our line, so service may be affected.

sheesh, lighten up. I'm not criticizing you. I'm suggesting what might be the mind set of your fellow commuters. There is no doubt that NYC sidewalks and crosswalks are more dangerous than trains. In February alone, 13 pedestrians and cyclists were killed, and 1191 were injured.

Update on NJT traffic: Just saw a short diesel powered train heading inbound. Diesel is not allowed in NY Penn, and normally this would be a Hoboken train. Where could it be going, maybe Secaucus.

Perhaps he'll be announcing that he will no longer be cutting funding to critical infrastructure projects to score political points for an ill-fated presidential / vice-presidential run?

Maybe I should take up skydiving then.

Can you define "enabler" for me? Just rhetorical.

CBS News just announced that Hoboken Station will be closed indefinitely as will the PATH station at Hoboken. Some trains that would normally terminate in Hoboken may be terminating in Secaucus with bus connection to Manhattan. Usual cross honoring is in place for this evening and tomorrow morning.

Christie hasn't said so explicitly, but he's implying that PATH part of building might reopen sooner than the NJT part, as former doesn't have structural damage. Actually does appear that PATH will run in and out of Hoboken for rush hour today.

I actually don't think midtown direct trains to maplewood/so will be *too* badly effected, as none of them connect with Secaucus. I'm pretty sure that's where all the displaced Bergen and other people who don't have direct trains will be routed through. Unless they start running all trains to secaucus to accommodate everyone. Even then, you will probably be able to get a seat in Maplewood before the crowding gets too bad on the way in. Coming home of course will be a different story. Show up early!

All PATH service to resume for tonight's rush.

I saw that statement- the phrasing is that service "through" Hoboken will continue, as they've assessed the PATH station structure and it's undamaged. That doesn't mean service TO Hoboken is restored- they may just run right through the station.

Suggest anyone with HOB PATH embarkation or debarkation as a part of their plan keep your ears open for clarification.

There is no "through" at the Hoboken station PATH. It's the last stop.

Hoboken is a terminal for PATH. Service doesn't run "through" it.

I think the PATH station is mostly next to, not under, the NJT station.

It was announced during the press conference that PATH service to Hoboken will be restored for the evening rush.

From an email I received time stamped 1:42 pm :

For information regarding this morning's NJ Transit train incident, the NJ Transit Emergency Information Line can be reached at 855-336-1774.

From an email I received tie stamped 1:00 pm

NY Waterway ferry service is suspended in and out of Hoboken Terminal. All other NY Waterway service is operating normally in and out of NYC. NY Waterway ferries will cross-honor Hoboken Terminal tickets on all other routes. For more information, please visit www.nywaterway.com.

- NJ Transit Rail, NJ Transit Light Rail, and PATH Train service remains suspended in and out of Hoboken Station. NJ Transit Buses are cross-honoring passengers. For more information, please visitwww.njtransit.com.

Source of both emails is Notify NYC.

I believe they said that there would be buses from Hoboken to the Secaucus transfer station.

The NYT alert stated that additional stops may be added on Midtown Direct trains east of Summit, which could entail these trains now stopping at Secaucus. At the very least, I suspect they are going to become fully local between Newark Broad and Summit, hitting East Orange, Highland, etc.

Sure there is. Can you get on a train at 33rd street and end up in Harrison without seeing the sky? Weekends it's single train. Week days it's switch or turn around a train. As I mentioned the station itself is physically fine in all respects. Going into and out of the station itself would be the issue.

The tracks literally end. You cannot go through that station. There is only one way in and out.
