Top 500 High Schools in the country.

why is everyone surprised that the best high schools in the country are the ones where rich white kids go? what's sad isn't that these lists are driven by whiteness and affluence; what's sad is that white affluent kids get far better public educations than poor and/or minority kids. you can scoff at the list all you want, and quibble about methodology, but the outrage shouldn't be that newsweek made a list that, for all its faults, tells the truth about public education in america, the outrage should be that it is so.

On average, kids who are poor do worse in school than kids who are affluent. We do not need Newsweek to tell us this. It's not a secret, although often denied by those who prefer to blame teachers and other less relevant factors. People reading Newsweek are probably not looking for enlightenment about inequality, though. They most likely just want to see if their school is on the list.

I'm pretty sure Newsweek had the top 500 schools (as opposed to 50, or 100) so 500 towns of 10,000+ people each in the United States would send this article around to each other to pat themselves on the back. The click bait!! Holy crap!! So many advertising dollars were gained with this article that was basically sending data through a questionable algorithm telling everyone what they already knew (rich white towns do well at test scores and sending kids to college). And everyone has clicked clicked clicked.

Who is surprised? No one, that's who.

Yes all those rich white people clicking. I'm surprised they don't do it monthly.
