I was doing some caulking around a closet baseboard and must have gotten a bit on my sock and then walked over my hardwood floors smearing a couple of spots. It is not a large amount, so i cannot peel it off, but more of streaks that you can see at an angle against the light. I'm afraid of using any chemical solvents/caulk removers not to ruin the finish on the floor ... the streaks are annoying me a lot especially when sunlight shines on them ...
Typically I'll use wd40 for any light/medium base of residue. WD40 works wonders on wood and other surfaces. It's even come thru in a pinch for me when refurbishing my drum sets. If the wd40 wont take it up you can also give it a light sanding with a very very fine grade sandpaper.....then you need to go over it with Minwax Polyurethane which matches your wood service (the safest bet is to go with a satin finish).......gd luck, JL
2 things to try, both available at Home Depot and other places; Goo Gone (it's citrus based and a little less industrial) and Goof Off (it's overall stronger).
Goo Gone may take a little longer to cut thru but should work.
@seaweed i have goo gone - you are free to stop by and borrow it - not worth buying a whole container !! i think you know where i live - just return remainder when you are done
goo gone is not a solvent for silicone caulk, i dont think. I'd be surprised if you can't just rub it off with your fingers - balling it up as mentioned earlier. don't use sandpaper. it'll take it off but repairing the result might leave you worse off.
See if you can heat it with a blow dryer. Try it in increments of about 10 seconds on high. Careful withthe heat, taking care that it won't mess up paint or the floor finish. Don't use an actual heat gun. Rubbing it might work but you could also try scraping it off gently with a razor blade or similar.
Thanks for the suggestions, the challenge is the layer is SUPER thin, that you can only see it as streaks of sort, so even scraping it off with something sharp does not work .. i tried pot scrubber sponge (the gentle 3m ones) and it did not help .. tried the green/yellow pot scrubber sponge, which is more harsh, and that started scratching the floor coating along with the silicone marks... this has got to be the most annoying thing to remove as nothing seems effective and the coating is so super thin ..
I tried to heat it also, but again did not seem to help ... I think for now I'll just try to ignore it, there are a few spots I made while walking unknowingly... hopefully over time it will wear out as I continually walk over it and rub off ... Thanks @new207040 for the offer on the goo gone, I'm a bit worried applying any chemicals/solvents on the floor..
I think the directions say don't use on wood or something to that effect. (I wanted to use the magic eraser to remove scuff marks from a finished door.)
