Things I don't get

Face tattoos. The only thing I would consider tattooing on my face is a full-size tattoo of my own face from when I was 30.

Barbara Streisand

These are two separate items, yes?

Just checking.

I put Barbara S. in the same category with Bruce S. They're talented I suppose, but their music holds no appeal to me. (Unlike Neil Y. who I think is a talentless, phony-baloney hack.)

Went to a Bruce Concert once at the old Met Life. Someone treated so I didn’t pay. Lots of charged up fans surrounded me but I almost fell asleep.

I was taken to a Jackson Browne show once. Many years ago. Maybe at the Meadowlands. I was unmoved to say the least. But I was taken as a guest by friends who loved him so I had to stand and clap and dance a bit. Years later, an old GF took me to a Dave Matthews concert. Same thing. Snore.

I was wondering about that place, as I drive past it a few times a week. This month you say? I'll keep an eye out.

I didn't realize Jamie deleted the thread - if he deleted it as non-paid advertising, I don't get it either. Nor do I agree.

I can be more specific, thx to BXJ...

Now that's a good everything-spice coverage ratio!

Yes - it was the daily and sometimes hourly promotion of a non-sponsor business which was constantly bumped to the top of the forum.  And again a non-sponsor unfairly gets free advertising via Soda's image.

Face tattoos are just dumb - here's the latest one getting a lot of attention from Cindy Crawford's son "misunderstood".

As for face tattoos, the key is go big or go home. Yesterday I found the most amazing book Homage to Humanity by Jimmy Nelson, an exploration of tribal cultures around the world. The most beautiful photographs you will see on the subject, and I've been exploring this subject for years.

Some of these are pretty funny.

I don't get being passionate enough about bagels to post about them hourly.

Did you see that everything-spice coverage?

I mean, c'mon.

I thought we weren't supposed to argue with what people don't get.  If that's not the case, I've got bone to pick with the people who don't get Bruce.

Nope. I think this should be a judgement-free zone. Well, other than the fact that the whole point of the thread is to judge things.

So our judgementalism should be free from judgement.

I thought that "I don't get" is NOT being judgmental in the sense that we're not putting it down.  We just don't understand the appeal.

Fair enough.

And if people want to start an argument about things they (or someone else) don't get, they can open a thread.

Another thing I don't get:

Waiting in a ridiculous line for Arturo's.

MOL new motto:

Judge without judgement.

Sorry - I forgot where we were.

this thread is mostly "stuff I don't like."  I think most of us "get" why people like prog rock, or Barbra Streisand or get face tattoos. We just don't like that stuff and have no interest in it.

I disagree. I don't get why, for instance, Babs Streisand is such a huge icon, not just that I don't care for her music. Likewise Bob Dylan. Look at the reaction I got from posting that. Like I'm expected to like him because of his rarified status, and there's something wrong with me that I don't. I don't care for their music ... but I don't get the cultish devotion to them evinced by some individuals.

Face tattoos? I don't understand what would possess someone to permanently mark their face if it's not done for a religious or cultural reason.

There's lots of stuff I don't like that if I mention it to someone who does it's no big deal.

Unfortunately, I get bagels

I don't get why so many of us take the bait and start fighting about someone else's professed likes or dislikes in the arts.  That someone dislikes artist X is not a personal attack on those of us who like X.  Plus, have you ever seen anyone here change their mind about a judgment of taste based on argument?  "Oh now I get it, I don't hate artist X anymore, I love him.  I just didn't understand until you explained it to me!"

I like bagels.  But you don't even need the bagel to eat all that other stuff.

Personally I don't get tattoos anywhere, not just on the face. And to be clear - it isn't a matter of not liking them, I'm really just neutral. I have lots of friends & family members who have them, and they're fine. I just don't get why you'd want one.

But re face tattoos: I am currently reading The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester - one of the few SF classics that I somehow managed to miss up to this point in my life. It's terrific and I'm enjoying it. But here is something I don't get.

The hero (or anti-hero) Gully Foyle gets tattooed on his face against his will early in the book. It is described as a "Maori-type" tattoo. Everybody from that point forward finds his face horrifying and all they can "see" is the tattoo, not his features.

Perhaps because tattoos are so common now, I just don't get that revulsion. Nor do I get how people could not see through to the guy's face.
