That new song by Adele

Every time I hear it, it brings this old song to mind, despite the slower tempo. Theme aside, is it the chords? The beat? My imagination?

It sounds like "someone like you," but with chords instead of single-note melody in the background. I don't know...so many of her songs sound the same to me....

She has a fantastic voice, but to me this song is a big nothing. There just isn't anything going on musically to hold my interest.

When that album comes out, it will break all sorts of records (unintentional pun). She does have an amazing voice, so good that it can take a meh song and make it sound special. (I thought the music video was pretty lame, though.)

Exactly. It sounds like it was part of a song in progress but wasn't finished. Like the work you pull off the studio floor from someone who died before it was complete.

I wouldn't be surprised if Adele had a much stronger hand in writing this batch of songs than she did previously. The kind of success she's had makes it hard for anyone to say "no" to her, and if she wants to steer the writing this time, then that's what's going to happen. That could account for this uninvolving tuneless mush getting picked as the first single. Where's Dan Wilson when you need him?

Put me in the disapointed camp. Hope the whole album is better.

Boring as hell, and the banging out of piano chords made me irritable. I also question the need to belt out a ballad like this one with her huge voice turned on full blast... seems to me the arrangement is at fault.

I was more impressed with the fact that she's slimmed down a bit and her makeup is flawless. Like you said skadave, I was waiting for the hook that never came. Too many repetitions of the boring chorus with not enough verses.

Musicmz, how did you feel about those three crashing piano chords?

I couldn't tell she "slimmed down" but I do think that a few years have been kind to her. She's always been beautiful and even more so now. Her voice is incredible. I like this song. I had the distinct impression that--despite the video--the person she was talking about had passed away. Hard to make your apologies to the dead...

I do think it's a bit derivative, but so many songs are...

My opinion: thumbs up
