Someone is rolling over in his grave today

The Rockefeller Family Fund is divesting its holdings in fossil fuels and calls ExxonMobil's actions "morally reprehensible"

Probably true.  If he was around in the 21st century, John D would have shifted to solar and wind by now.

Yeah, but Nelson would still be banging the housekeeper.

It was his "assistant" Nelson was with when he bought the farm in the saddle.

If you folks are ever inclined, do visit the Nelson estate in Sleepy Hollow.

Just FYI, there is no final "e" in ExxonMobil.

The Exxon Mobile is what Exxon Man drives ...

J. D. would still be in oil because that is where the money still is. No way can the same amount of money be made in solar and wind as in oil. And that is going to continue for a very long time.

J.D. is becoming oil. There's a difference.

From his picture as an old man, there did not seem to be much there to become oil.

All kidding aside, J.D. originally invested in oil because he saw the potential for future growth and profits.  He went in at the start of the growth of the industry.

Hence my comment about what he would do in the 21st century.

if Rockefeller was alive today, he'd be 176 years old.  He could just sell tickets to see himself and make a fortune.

But in all seriousness, ExxonMobil's actions rank as possibly the most damaging deception ever undertaken by a corporation.  And it should be noted that John Senior invented modern philanthropy with the conditional grant, and left an unprecedented legacy in education (Spelman, U of Chicago) and medicine, among many areas.

John Junior was the first great environmental philanthropist.  Grand Teton, Great Smoky and Acadia wouldn't exist without his largesse, and Sleepy Hollow Restorations (now Historic Hudson Valley) and Colonial Williamsburg owe their existence to him as well.

Judging the Rockefellers solely on Senior's ruthlessness and line of work is certainly a mistake based on what his descendants have accomplished, good and bad.

Actually, John D, started in oil when there was really no money in it. He founded Standard Oil (ESSO) in 1870 when there really was no infrastructure for a high demand of petroleum products. It was an industry that was just starting just like wind and solar is now.

He was very forward looking.

If he were alive now, would pioneer and invest in wind and solar ad he did in oil when there was not much money in it.

You really are daft, aren't you? I predict the industry will shrink for a long time coming. It will happen faster once government removes its subsidies. Government subsidies of fossil fuels used to be a good idea, but given that (1) it is destined to be replaced with better sources, and (2) it's super profitable and doesn't need help, we need to end them.

Tobacco is a shrinking industry that is generating more profit than ever. Oil will be the same way.

I think everyone realizes that fossil fuels must be eventually replaced. Coal mines continue to close.

We're not going to be flying in solar-powered 747s anytime in the near future.

But what's appalling is the Koch/GOP approach - denial and obstructionism.

Now I understand how you think.

I saw a recent documentary on one of the cable channels about him. Absolutely fascinating how he practically created the petroleum industry on his own.

Like most industrialists, his record as an employer was far from clean.
