Reporting from my basement: Politics and pandemic, a deadly duo

That's exactly what he's doing.  The virus is not controlled, and he wants things opened up.

In your bad news section - wouldn't that include the people that Trump exhorted to liberate their states?

Think back a few awful weeks and recall the outrage expressed by a few governors who declared they were going to get folks back to work, regardless of what Washington’s experts were saying daily of the inevitable rising numbers of virus hospitalizations and deaths.

Proponents of statehood independence vs federal overreach  brouhaha ran hot and heavy.

I do not recall DJT exhorting governors to open their states BEFORE the virus was controlled. He has been  a cheerleader, expressing his wishes to see America reopened, all along. Trying to instill hope in frightened and desperate people is his duty.

I have a question for you: do you think states and municipalities, etc should be able to use the monies being released for COVID-19 costs for other purposes i.e. Bail-outs for mismanaged pension plans?

Your question is ludicrous.

States had a budget of x dollars for the year, which included funding pensions. (how all of a sudden this has become an issue of pension mismanagement is just a Fox/McConnell talking point, believed only by the gullible)

But then, the states had to all of a sudden spend y dollars on COVID. So if the Feds give the states the y dollars they've spent on COVID, are the states supposed to not go back to their original budget plans, which included funding pensions?

Explain how that's supposed to work. What other things that Republicans don't like should the states be prevented from spending money on?

As evidenced by the fact that he has repeatedly put forth dates for reopening that could never have been achieved safely. This is, after all, the guy who pledged to pack the Churches for Easter.

Nohero:

“And your saying that it's only the "meatheads" who will get sick and possibly die, is unfair and cruel to describe not only those who will suffer in the future, but also those we know of now. “

Not my words. Meatheads are the people who flaunt safety measures set in place — plenty of evidence last weekend in NJ parks and beaches — and can bring the virus to their own homes and loved ones.

The in-laws I mentioned earlier last month now have two boxes of ashes in their home, awaiting funerals.

Don't play the "I know people who died card", as if that gives you some sort of golden ticket to make any defense of Trump, without caring about accuracy.

My spouse teaches high school in Elizabeth.  Several of her friends and co-workers there contracted the disease there (before the shutdowns).  Two have since died; they both have school-aged children.  Another is still struggling with his recovery.  Lord knows how many others contracted it and escaped with mild symptoms that they didn't even notice at the time.  Like everyone else in that building and their families, we went through a couple of weeks of concern until we saw that we didn't show any symptoms.  My wife was able to get an antibody test recently, which came back negative (so good news, she was never infected; bad news, she doesn't have a potential immunity).

The owner of the restaurant that was my parents' favorite, passed away from this disease.  Again, contracted before the shutdown.  Since my father passed away a few years ago, we still take my 94-year-old Mom there, not only because it's a place she likes to go when we get her out of the house, but because the owner and staff were all friends.  I didn't find out he had passed until weeks after it happened, because it was after the closures and he became sick and died within a very short time.

Those are two examples of reasons why I don't think much of Trump's nonsense, or of uninformed defenses of Trump that ignore facts or rely on completely false narratives of what he's done and said, or what is actually going on.  No matter who is pushing them.

And you're obviously helping Trump set up the defense that if anyone gets sick and dies now, it will be their own fault because they're meatheads.

Meanwhile, Trump is keeping accurate information away from the public, because he doesn't care how many people die if he can say that he allowed businesses to open.

Admin shelves CDC guide to reopening country

A set of detailed documents created by the nation’s top disease investigators meant to give step-by-step advice to local leaders deciding when and how to reopen public places such as mass transit, day care centers and restaurants during the still-raging pandemic has been shelved by the Trump administration.

The 17-page report by a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention team, titled “Guidance for Implementing the Opening Up America Again Framework,” was researched and written to help faith leaders, business owners, educators and state and local officials as they begin to reopen.

It was supposed to be published last Friday, but agency scientists were told the guidance “would never see the light of day,” according to a CDC official. The official was not authorized to talk to reporters and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.

The AP obtained a copy from a second federal official who was not authorized to release it. The guidance was described in AP stories last week, prior to the White House decision to shelve it.

Trump had nurses at the Oval Office for National Nurse's Day.  Nobody's allowed to wear a mask around him apparently.

And still telling lies.

Very sad. But happy that your wife, your mom and family are well. Stay safe.

Truly offensive...

Nohero. ”Don't play the "I know people who died card", as if that gives you some sort of golden ticket to make any defense of Trump, without caring about accuracy.”

How would you describe the account of your own experience? Back at ya!? Suffering is not competition sport.

Please let your hero know that. He's been making it a "competition sport" since the day he announced his candidacy.

I was replying to your attempt to "shut down" criticism of Trump.  I haven't mentioned it before now, but I did because it's insufferable to see Trump defended in that way.  And your reply is right from the Trump playbook, accusing others of the tactic that you're using.

I know that I won't get an apology for the comment that I'm "truly offensive" for a relevant comment about the sickness and deaths of people I know.

Bad news, a quote from the LA Times:

“The number of new cases must decline for at least two weeks; the state must be able to perform contact tracing on any new cases; there has to be enough testing to diagnose any person with symptoms; and the healthcare system must have the capacity to treat all patients, not just those with COVID-19.

“To my knowledge, there are no states that meet all four of those criteria,” Rivers said.”

When the slow reopening of the country was being discussed by the task force, there were three phases in the plan. The need to evaluate results before taking on the next phase was clearly stressed.

Haste, sadly, will make matters worse.

More people have to push back at Trump's b u l l s h I t like this, to his face -

Within 10 seconds of her talking, he turned away and stopped listening.

CNN: One of Trump's personal valets has tested positive for coronavirus

Perhaps now he will start caring or, at the very least, wearing a mask.

No, it's the opposite.  Every person who comes into his (august) presence has to be tested.  The White House literally has the best tests - fast verification as to whether the person carries Covid-19.

Trump and Pence were immediately tested when they found out about the aide.  I don't know what happened to the poor guy, maybe they took him out and shot him.

the pandemic did not start in NYC.  that's simply false.  The NY outbreak almost certainly originated in Europe.  And the European outbreak likely came from one of a couple of Asian countries.

Well, "it all started in NYC" needs a bunch of rewriting, esp. if "all" is taken to mean the world and not the U.S.  But apparently a lot of cases in other parts of the U.S seem to be related to the outbreak in NYC.

Sub-headline from NYT:  "The coronavirus outbreak in New York City became the primary source of
infections around the United States, researchers have found."

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/07/us/new-york-city-coronavirus-outbreak.html?action=click&module=Spotlight&pgtype=Homepage

drift:  What is the right word for that secondary headline??

The headline - "Travel From New York City Seeded Wave of U.S. Outbreaks"

[Edited to add] Ms. Mtierney's post ("we will have daily revelations on the course - and source — of this pandemic. — Times tweet this pm... says it all started in NYC") suggests something that's not true, and not actually suggested by the NY Times.

[Edited again to add] And Ms. Tierney, who really must develop the habit of reading the other comments before posting, adds the below post with a link to the exact same headline I already mentioned.

Good news: many areas in the country can open soon, providing use of all the social distancing and other safety measures continue — possibly for weeks more.

Bad news: some people will flaunt regulations and protection rules. So, folks who want to get back to work and not get sick, have to be aware it is not just what you do to protect yourselves — we need to have an awareness that some people have a death wish.

well, hopefully this will end any talk of Cuomo running for Prez. He screwed up.

Though ultimately it's still the Federal government's screw up. The CDC should have been way ahead of this. It's their effing job. But there was some orange ahole standing in the way.

People are going to get sick through no fault of their own.  It's heartless to attack, in advance, anyone who becomes ill in the areas that are "opened up", especially when there is sound scientific opinion against many of those openings.

do you not realize that just yesterday the federal government demanded that meat packing plants open immediately?  With no standards for protecting workers?

Do they tell you anything on Fox?

Bad News: Nohero wants the country locked down until COVID-19 virus is no longer a threat any where. Not happening. Magical thinking.
