Free press in Russia (Pretty much history)

This is the site I have been going to for Russian news - chrome does a decent job in translating it.

They're very close to getting shutdown, I truly hope they survive.  Russia is getting much more aggressive with their propaganda and how to disseminate it.

They even got the Nobel Peace Prize last year.

I went on the site and took a peek in the Shop. Fell in love with a scarf for 200 rubles. Truly. It has an image of the world with people all around it. Would be wonderful if they could be sold to help the Russian protestors. I saw you comment on another thread that you wish there was a fund to support them. Be a wonderful fundraiser on MOL if we could figure out a way to either import them or get the prototype.

Hello everyone, this is Nikita Kondratiev, head of the Novaya information service.

Today, our newsroom has remained one of the few in the ranks of independent news journalism in Russia.

Ekho Moskvy is being literally erased from modern history, Meduza* remains on social networks despite being blocked, Mediazona* continues to operate as before, but I’m sure it is also aware of all the risks.

Today, the Russian parliament finally introduced military censorship without actually declaring it. For “disseminating knowingly false information about the use of the Russian Armed Forces,” we, news journalists, can get up to 15 years in the camps. “Knowingly false” information is information about prisoners, killed, shelling of civilians in Ukraine. We are asked to admit that none of this happened.

Yes, we can say that the path to free journalism is through barracks and barbed wire. All this is very beautiful, but insane nonsense.

The truth is that apart from us and a couple of other newsrooms in the country, there is no one else to do the news work.

So we stay until the very end. We do not leave for pre-trial detention centers and colonies. We are not leaving for Europe or Georgia. We stay in Russia, this is our country.

Unfortunately, as soon as the laws of military censorship come into force (Vladimir Putin's signature remains), we will have to stop publishing reports from the fronts. We will no longer be able to tell the truth about the fighting in Ukraine, leaving the floor to both sides. We will have to temporarily forget about shelling in the cities of our brotherly country. Again, temporarily, we will have to forget about the fate of our soldiers, our peers, who find themselves in hot spots often against their will.

What is left to report? What facts to check? About the closure of another mall? About the departure of companies from our comfortable lives? This is ridiculous.

We will continue to collect information. But when and in what form it will be published - we do not know.

We are terribly ashamed to take this step while our friends, acquaintances and relatives are experiencing real hell in Ukraine. And on both sides.

But it would be even more shameful to refuse coverage of events at all. Military censorship does not cover the fact that the war is going on inside us. How does what is happening affect the mental state of Russians and Ukrainians? What is the future of our economy and our personal finances? Will Russia protest against what is happening? What form will the repression take? What will happen to medicine? But is the topic of torture in the penitentiary system closed?

We remain to cover this huge range of topics. Correspondents of the information service of Novaya Gazeta have been working all these days without sleep, and will continue to work, but in a different capacity - we will carefully and calmly publish stories about where the global turning point that occurred at 5 am on February 24 is leading the lives of each of us.

But try to "feed" the reader a picture of reality, in which there will be only reports from the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation and news from civilian life? No, this will never happen.

The Washington Post's first post-war publisher, Philip Graham, said news is the first rough draft of history.

We, the first military generation in Putin's Russia (many of us are not even twenty-five), say: we cannot leave the Russian reality without at least these sketches of history. Otherwise, everything that happened in Russia in the 2020s will remain in the memory of our children as a fiction invented by someone else.

From 00:00 on the night of March 4 to 5, Novaya Gazeta temporarily refuses the format of news reports under the threat of criminal prosecution of journalists. Simply because martial law is more likely to take effect at dawn. We will definitely figure out how to survive, not go to the colony, and return to you in the same capacity and at least with some good news.

The rectors of 700 higher education institutions of the country came out in support of President Putin and his "suffering but necessary decision". The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) ruled under Rule 39 of the Rules of Court (Urgent Measures) and advised the Russian government to refrain from obstructing the work of Novaya Gazeta amid the armed conflict in Ukraine. The decision is published on the website of the court.

The request for urgent measures was made as part of a complaint about a violation of Art. 10 of the Convention, by the applicants Novaya Gazeta and Dozhd TV channel.*

“The court ordered the Russian government to refrain, until further notice, from actions and decisions aimed at completely blocking or suspending the publication of Novaya Gazeta, as well as from any other actions that, under the circumstances, may interfere with the exercise by Novaya Gazeta of its rights guaranteed by Art. 10 of the Convention (freedom of expression),” the decision says.

The decision of the ECtHR was made at the request of the editor-in-chief of Novaya, Dmitry Muratov, dated March 3. In it, he pointed out that Roskomnadzor demanded that the newspaper remove materials about the "special operation" in Ukraine, published from February 24 to March 1, and also blocked the Dozhd TV channel and dozens of other media outlets in connection with the coverage of these events. Muratov, in a statement, asked the court to recommend to the Russian authorities not to block publications containing information about the conflict in Ukraine that differ from the official position of the Russian authorities.

On March 5, laws on criminal liability for “fakes about the actions of the Russian military” and “calls for anti-Russian sanctions” came into force in Russia. Article 207.3 appeared in the Criminal Code - "on the public dissemination of knowingly false information about the use of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in order to protect the interests of Russia and its citizens." For the dissemination of information that does not correspond to the official position of the Russian authorities, you can get up to 10 years in prison. If this caused “serious consequences” - up to 15 years.


It is amazing how the press has to report the news.   I'm guessing she'll get 15 years in jail for this possibly?


Isn't it amazing how the usual suspects here who always cry out for freedom of the press and democracy are COMPLETELY silent about this?   

I wonder why.


15 years. Many of us take freedom of speech for granted. I'm mesmerized by the daily bravery. Can't think of an attribute that I admire more, maybe compassion, but that seems rather impotent without courage. And it feels horrid to sit here and feel we should do more.


Well luckily all of MOL's most vocal supporters of Julian Assange are protesting what is happening to journalists and free speech in Russia.

I assume it’s because we’re an audience that has some involvement with American policies and practices but hardly any influence on Russia’s.

They have been on the edge with their reporting the past few weeks.  Vlad has won at the suppression of the Press.

I'm sure many of you have seen this - Zelensky was interviewed by 4 Russian newspaper for 1.5 hours the other day.  Russia is not allowing it to be aired.  Even before the release of the material, Roskomnadzor banned the Russian media from publishing an interview with Zelensky and threatened journalists with checks. The Prosecutor General's Office stated that "a fundamental legal assessment will be given to the content of the published statements and the fact of their placement."

Novaya was one of those NGO funded publications.  I posted about that a while ago.  That's probably why they got shut down.  Those publications exist to start color revolutions and revolts--not because the people who work there feel strongly about the issues--because they are paid to do that. 

Zelensky only allows one media station.  Do you think he would allow an interview with Putin to be aired?   I don't agree with censorship, but neither side would allow an interview from the other side. They are both wrong.

Can there ever be a popular revolution anywhere or are they all at the behest of the CIA?

The USSR collapsed under the weight of its own ****.  That's not exactly how George Kennan put it, but close enough.  Kennan did know a thing or two about the Soviet Union.
