Anthony Weiner

Sympathy for those headlines.
And if he was "great for NY" why isn't he a viable candidate?

I didn't say he wasn't a viable candidate, I said I think he'd be a good mayor...
I do think the ppl who say he's setting himself up for next election are prob right. Or that's how it'll work out. NY will be reintroduced to him by then and it won't be shocking... America doesn't seem to have a problem with philanderers, not saying I agree with that, just saying pre-penis shots, I really thought he was a smart and thoughtful person who cared abt what he was doing.

The recent NYT mag section piece on Weiner and Huma portrayed a pair of calculating careerist pols. Their coy disengenousness about whether he had decided to run or not was really sickening. After all, isn't it clear that he has always intended to make this run, and he was just trying to figure out how much public contrition bought him the right moment to enter the race?

@Steve…Bloomberg out spent Bill Thompson in a close race 14-1. And that race was one of the LOWEST turnout in NYC History and costly for Bloomberg.

The billionaire mayor had poured $90 million of his own fortune into the race, a sum without equal in the history of municipal politics that gave him a 14-to-1 advantage in campaign spending.

But the turnout appeared to be on track to be among the lowest in modern New York history as the mayor’s vaunted campaign machinery failed to deliver the surge of supporters his aides had predicted.

“Everybody was shocked,” a Bloomberg aide said.

and this…

Bloomberg Spent $102 Million to Win 3rd Term NYT

To eke out a narrow re-election victory over the city’s understated comptroller, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg spent $102 million of his own money, or about $183 per vote, according to data released on Friday, making his bid for a third term the most expensive campaign in municipal history.

Mr. Bloomberg, the wealthiest man in New York City, shattered his own previous records: he poured $85 million into his campaign in 2005, and $74 million on his first bid for office in 2001.

And the $102 million tab is likely to rise: the mayor has not yet doled out his storied bonuses to campaign workers, which can top $100,000 a person. That spending will not be reported until after his inauguration.

He has now officially spent more of his own money in the pursuit of public office than any other individual in United States history.
Almost seems like somebody who put his money where his mouth is. To borrow a phrase.

Personally, I think that legislatively imposed term limits are absurd.

Absent such limits, the electorate already has term limits. It's called elections.

Imagine how this would have played out for Trump when he had his scandal with Marla Maples. Most people don't care about this stuff, other than the media and political opponents in an election.

Difference: Trump was probably overjoyed by scandalous NYP front pages. He actually was scoring with "major hottie," even while married to a then-recent eastern Euro purchase.

Weiner: clearly in need of help. No one's dumb enough to do such risky kinky siht with a clear mind. The guy's out of control (literally). Pretty suave: dcik pix. Classy stuff.

Feel sorry for Huma. And of course, like HRC, she's somehow partially "responsible" for dcik-slingin' spouse.

I think Huma is only "responsible" to the extent that he is still her spouse.

Good point. This also brings to mind the double-bind women find themselves in: Am I strong by leaving? Or am I strong because I'm trying to hold my marriage together?

But hey, if ever there were a mom figure who has experience with this sort of thing, it's HRC.

Weiner is an addict. It's no different than an addiction to alcohol, drugs or gambling.

So true. Having to deal with a spouse's bad behavior in the public eye must be hellish.

In both cases I would have left in a hurry.

LOST, as usual, makes lots of sense. Who on earth would risk such public humiliation and career/family suicide if he weren't addicted? It's a lot easier (and more fun) to just call him a "perv" or whatever.

Are you sure you didn't mean adick.

I started this "Anthony Weiner" thread 3 years ago to comment on his interest in running for NYC mayor. I thought that was politically relevant to us here in M/SO.

I don't think his latest icky behavior is politically relevant at all. Whoever revived this thread to sate his personal prurient political predilections could have started a new thread.

I feel sorry for little Weiner. He clearly did not sign up for this.

So true. And will undoubtedly be exposed to the scandal eventually.
