Stump and root ball removal - who to hire?

I'm frustrated...we have large stump and root balls in our yard, thanks to a winter storm, and need to figure out who will remove them. The trees were not giant, but the root balls are probably 5-6 feet or so around, plus a few feet of stump.

Who does this work?  One person told me to hire an excavation company,.but I'd love to know if anyone here has recommendations. I need to get it done before I get a summons...

[Our highly-regarded tree company was wonderful about removing the bulk of the trees, but didn't include the stump work then "due to the backlog of urgent storm recovery work", which seemed fair.  Now they don't want the job.  Not sure they'll be getting any more work or recommendations from us, having left this mess.

Our lawn guys don't have the equipment handle it.  The highly-recommended driveway guy we are/were about to hire said he would as part of the prep for a big repair/replacement job, but now claims he never made that offer, and doesn't want to risk his equipment on it.]

Thanks in advance!

Try Anthony’s Landscaping - they removed ours. Did a good job but pricey!

Dare I ask how pricey?  I'll definitely give them a call...

Try Giovine Landscaping out of West Orange.  They haven't done this type of work for me, but rarely shy away from difficult work.  Great to work with too.

We've been very happy using Ticos Tree Service. Have no idea of pricing as we have them do a variety of things over the years. 973-652-6894

The normal practice is for the tree service to offer stump grinding as an add-on (extra cost) option.  If your tree service is declining to come back to do that part, hang them out to dry (name them).  You will probably need another tree service to finish the job.

I don't recall anyone offering us root ball removal (and I have a back yard sink hole as the roots of a tree removed 20 years ago are now rotting away).

Years ago my grandmother was convinced she had a sinkhole in her back yard that was going to swallow the house and she wanted me to call Millburn PD to report it.  Maybe it was because her family came from Sussex Co, and sinkholes do happen out there, though even there I don't think they swallow homes like the ones in Florida do.  I said I wasn't calling the PD and no way there was a sinkhole that would get to that size in Millburn (not counting where water lines break under roadways, obviously).  She showed me a spot in her garden where she was able poke a four foot long stick straight into the ground with no resistance.  I looked at the spot and said Grandma, when I was very little I have a vague memory of there being a tree stump there, and it's gone now.  Do you think that maybe this sinkhole is just the roots rotting out?  She thought for a minute, and then realized I was right, that was where her old apple tree was, the tree itself had actually been cut down before I was even born.  Long story short, she decided we didn't have to call the PD after all since she was now satisfied that it wouldn't swallow the house.

To clarify....if the tree is uprooted (as mine are), stump grinding is not the issue.  The root ball is on my lawn, not in it, and thus leaving it isn’t really an option.

I read this title quickly as "Trump and Root Ball Removal."

Then you should have seen 'Trump has rotted ball removed'

Sorry, that part was not clear from initial post.  This is different from stump grinding, but probably still within the scope of a tree removal company.

I have done this for shrubs & small trees (up to 4-6" trunk diameter).  Can't handly anything bigger than that.
