Stanchion Sign

So this evening.... Irvington Avenue, one stanchion knocked off the yellow line and into the driving lane.

Prospect. One stanchion knocked off the yellow lane and now sitting in the bike lane. Oh well, so the bicyclist has to go into traffic to avoid the stanchion.

When are we gonna get rid of the damn things?

A second Prospect stanchion was knocked out of commission and is now in the bicycle lane. That is good. We wouldn't want the first one to feel it was a failure at its job. You would think that whoever put them out would be concerned enough to place them back between the center lines. I guess they ain't too important after all.

Two others on Prospect have sustained damage and are a bit worse for the wear.

People hitting the signs is not the problem. It is the symptom of the problem.

Would it be better if they were reflective on all surfaces?

Yes. I think reflective side panels or tape would probably help.

I don't know if there is something they can put on for side panels so headlights have something to reflect off of from a side approach?

A  better idea .... since we believe its important, buy and install permanent signs to be placed on berms instead of in the middle of the road.

You mean like these? These work super well.

Like that, or the ones that the pedestrian pushes the button before crossing the street. The sign then lights up.

I've seen that on Springfield. Very few drivers stop for those either. The problem is not the flashing/non flashing of the signs or the placement of the signs or how many signs, it's the drivers. You want them to stop, give them a red traffic light. No one cares about crosswalk signs, they're street furniture. They're invisible to most drivers.

Formerlyjerseyjack's idea is the best. Many of these signs are not on busy roads such as Woodland Road.Sometimes cars or gardeners' trucks are parked on both sides and it is a tight squeeze.
