We had a persistent leak that nobody could fix, we were ready to suck it up and buy a new roof, Ron Busardo came over, took a look said we had a few years left on our roof, and got it all sorted quickly and reasonably.

Excerpts from the quote they gave us:
The shingles on the front (sunny side) roof slopes are newer than the rear slopes. It looks like the
roof section above the closet was done in high sun. The shingles are scuffed up. I think we can save them. Since the rear roof is older and going to need new roofing in a few years, our goal will be to keep you dry until then. At that time you may choose to get the whole roof done. Your roof is quite challenging.
...
Knowing that the one leak is severe, as soon as we receive a signed copy and deposit, we will start
work within two days. This approach is good because it will most likely rain soon after. You can
monitor our progress. We want you dry before we totally complete the work.

We've used R & G with great results, no rip offs.

do you have slate or asphalt? we have slate and a flat roof and use Dave Decastro who has been fantastic (many postives for Dave if you do a search)

We had Scott's do ours last fall and were pleased.

Dave Decastro...no question.

We used Dave DeCastro for a small repair needed because a raccoon who had ripped off some shingles to turn our attic into a nursery, and we had a positive experience.

My mother and a few of our neighbors used R&G for a full roof replacement and had positive experiences.

We used R&G or roof replacement and Scotts for an emergency repair. Both were great. When we got quotes there were definitely a couple of shady places. "You don't need a permit, we will do it on weekends quotes....." Run far away from those.

Six years ago we replaced our slate with asphalt. Complete tear off and some underlay replaced. Used AA Martin, happy with the work, the price and the fact that we haven't had any issues since installation.

We got estimates from R&G, Scott's, and Ticos for our complete roof replacement. Scott's was lowest and did a fine job for us. But I have heard from many people who got better prices from one of the others.

Another happy customer of R&G!

We used Essex Home Improvement about 11 years ago. The guy was great. A couple of months ago we had this tiny little drip in the living room. So I had Tico's come and do an estimate and the guy told me that I needed to have a whole new roof installed at a cost of $10,000 +.
I called Essex Home and not only did the guy remember me, he sent someone out the next day who climbed up on the roof, fixed the little problem (it was a nail drip) and patched some other little thing that he noticed for no charge. I was really impressed with that. I like when people stand by their work.
They also did our deck 11 years ago which is fantastic. I've had absolutely no trouble with it.

We used R&G (for full roof replacement) and Dave DeCastro (for small roofing jobs). We were very pleased with both. oh oh

For small repairs, 2nd (or 3rd?) a strong recommendation for Dave DeCastro. Scott's repeatedly did not fix a leaky spot, but Dave did it in one go.

Bay Roofing, Fairfield, N.J.- Highly recommend!

I will chime in yet again for Tico's. The owner was extremely honest with us time and again when we were getting our house ready to sell. In fact, at one point he told us we didn't need to do anything about one situation, effectively turning down paid work for his team. Tico's replaced our entire roof, removing three layers of shingles and changing out some pieces of the plywood decking and trim that had rotted over time. They also re-sided the east-facing walls, where the cedar shakes had taken a beating from morning sun for decades. We were very happy with their work and behavior.

OTOH, Scott's did a dreadful job for our neighbor, leaving her with leaks that they then tried to patch up with tar after putting on a new roof... rather badly.

Has anyone used Dave Decastro for a whole roof replacement?

Do the other roofers mentioned above guaranty their work? If so, it parts and labor or just parts? And how long?

I assume that replacing a roof doesn't impact property taxes - as it isn't an improvement?

I know the roofing material we bought through Tico's had a lengthy warranty, but I have no idea whether there was any warranty or guarantee on the labor. Then again, I'm pretty sure they care enough about their reputation to come back and fix any problems without charging additional. But I could be wrong about that.

It didn't affect our taxes. However, our taxes were increasing a thousand a year for each of the eight years we lived there, so if they had tried to raise them as a result of having the roof replaced, I probably would have actually exploded.

I can tell you that R&G told me that guarantee the roof, but wouldn't guarantee any of the other work they did (or didn't do).

I want to put in a plug for Peter Traub, particularly for slate roofs, but really for any roofing job. His company is pretty much the only one in the area that does slate which means he could probably gouge his customers but he has been great for my church (Prospect Presbyterian) and has not taken advantage of his monopoly situation at all, quite the contrary.

Definitely check his company out if you need roofing work!

Peter Traub also has extensive experience installing cedar roofs. A nice guy to boot.

Just curious, why did you choose to replace slate with asphalt? I would love to have a slate roof instead of asphalt..

We have a slate roof and bring back AA Marten whenever we need maintenance because he is the most honest contractor we have dealt with since we became homeowners. And we have dealt with quite a few!

Another vote for R&G. They did a nice job for us and were reasonable.

I'm guessing the large difference in cost is the primary factor for most people.

So, is is Traub or DeCastro for slate?

We need those avalanche thingies installed on our slate roof to prevent the snow and ice floes from killing everything below them as the snow melts and they slide off.
