Rise in Waste Management Price

Today I called W.I. to make sure they could take our account beginning Tuesday. They can.

I see what you did there.

Well I gotta save all the money I can to pay for my car's tires that are gonna get stolen. I even gave up putting money in the church collection basket.

We switched to WI when they first arrived in town and have been happy ever since. We pay $61 per quarter for one can once a week. They also still have the bulk pickup service (up to 4 items once a month on the last Saturday of the month and a bag/box of "junk" can count as one item, last I spoke to them about it.)

Having a choice between two operators should have helped keep the price down, so I'm not quite sure what is going on with WM.

I'm not sure what to think about having it included in the taxes. It might discourage recycling, composting, etc. which now keep our actual garbage to less than one bag per week.

When I left WM I was paying $95 a quarter… I used walk to their little office on Springfield Avenue and pay them because they had the monopoly on garbage disposal. It’s a mafia!
If more people start switching to WI then they won’t have to park that garbage truck on elmwood Ave and keep running back and forth with the pickup trucks to fill it. We might have a garbage war in maplewood that could be fitting for an episode of the sopranos…

@Formerlyjerseyjack

BRAVO!!!

Did they offer to meet WI’s price for the same service?  Please give some specifics.  Also, will there be any impact on recycling?  Thanks, JJ

They beat W.I.'s price by $50 for the same large cans and same amount of pick-ups.

BUT  --- W.M.'s price doesn't include putting items out on the curb. I gotta drive them to the municipal yard or wait for large item drop off.

Recycling will not be affected. I completed the 200 hour recycling course at Rutgers. I support recycling.

As I posted in another thread a couple of weeks ago, My work in the recycling industry has resulted in (I estimate) 500,000 tons of waste material being diverted from landfills in the tristate region to recycling centers.

Does the quoted price include their surcharges?

Yuppers.

Hmm, then WM tried to keep me on - they still wanted double the $90/quarter WI is offering.

WM did garden debris pickup - I don't see this as an offering for Waste Industries on their website - is there an alternate for this?

Waste Industries does garden debris. I don’t remember the price.

I’d love to see a spreadsheet showing best offers for all options from the 2 companies.

Our final follow-up…for now at least-

Just cancelled waste mgmt; signed up w/ Waste Inds.  at less than half price for same service.  If we want to return to wm their rate will be more than double WI’s.  New service starts May 2.

The price for this yard waste collection had been steady at 65.00 since I started using it many years ago. The price just jumped up to 125.00 this year. That suggests to me that the garbage collection cost is also going to jump up in the near future.

W.M., --- we got a card in the mail. Yard waste Wednesday pick-ups. $265.00. BUT there is a senior discount.

Waste Industries is up to $125 this year.  A big increase, but still in the range of "worth it."

You know, if a cost hasn't gone up in years it may not have kept up with the expense involved.  It's funny that a company is losing customers because they held the line for years instead of increasing prices $10 every year.
