I'm tidying up one room at a time this week and I need a container for recycling that can sit in plain view under that center island overhang here in my kitchen. Thinking maybe a white container of some sort or something creative. I think a lid is needed. Ideas ?
A regular plastic rectangular trash bin hidden inside a custom wooden piece that matches the existing island? Then you can just lift out plastic bin to empty?
Do you have a cabinet that is empty? You can get a kit for roll out bins...could be one for trash and one for recycle. Otherwise, maybe a free standing covered can,..lots of nice looking ones at Container Store
Nearest Container Stores are Paramus Ifreestandin on Route 17 northbound side and Sixth Avenue in the city in what has become a sort of Flatiron/Chelsea outdoor big-box mall. Paramus obviously more practical for large items.
If you have an empty cabinet just get a basic plastic bin to fit. They're lightweight enough to easily pull in and out. The kits are fine but do take up space. An even less expensive (and simple) option is to use a box from the liquor store (in the cabinet). When it's full you can dump the whole thing, or reuse it until it gets grubby.
Obviously depends how big you need it. I keep two bins in a huge drawer I made at the end of my island specifically for trash and recycling. It works well except for now when it's difficult to get to our outside recycling tote, so we have an extra plastic bin out...real classy.
My kitchen is too small to house all our recycling -- I just have one of those smaller blue bins with the recycling symbol, and it sits on the back porch right outside the back door. I throw stuff into it every day and when it's full, it gets walked down the back steps and dumped into the recycling toter. I am terrible at developing "systems" but this one works pretty well for me.
ETA: Our back porch is screened in, so the recycling bin is mostly sheltered from the elements. If the back porch weren't semi-enclosed, I don't think my system would work so well...
You can get the pull out for a few bucks at the Home depot. It is a decent size and you could always replace the bins by using your own. We purchased multiple bins that fit and just replace a full bin with an empty one. The hardware really does not take up much space, maybe an inch and a half in height.
Another option, which I saw on one of those DIY programs, is to use a pull out hamper that looks like a piece of furniture. Something like this or bigger depending on the space you are trying to fill. In the show they customized it to match the kitchen cabinets with the knobs and stain.
We use a plastic garbage bin in a cabinet and use paper grocery bags as "liners." Keeps the bin clean and when full, we just pull out the bag and put the whole thing into the recycling container outside.
