Podcasts - What are you listening to?

Any favorite podcasts you can recommend? I've tested out quite a few, but most are not great. So far, one of the best quality ones has been "Here's The Thing" by Alec Baldwin. I've listened to S-Town (it was ok) and Missing Richard (again, ok). Many thanks for input!

I recently discovered and LIKE the NPR Politics Podcast ... Weekly Round-Up ... It's nice to hear the political issues of the day discussed in calm voices.

The Daily

Eater Upsell

The Memory Palace

Crimetown

Note to Self

Radiolab

WTF with Marc Maron

Sound Opinions

Wait Wait Don't Tell Me (and all of the other NPR podcasts)

Death, Sex & Money

The Moth

The Broad Experience

New Yorker Fiction

I have found The Moth to be endlessly fascinating and fun. Real, "regular" people telling their stories.

The original "Serial" both years were good. Second on This American Life. Excellent as is Radio Lab.

Looking forwards to other's suggestions.

-Ron Carter

Some repeats from above:

On the Media

This American Life

The Moth

Here's the Thing (look back on older one's Angela too - the one with Billy Joel is fantastic and the reason I started listening to On the Media was due to Alec's interview with Bob Garfield - I actually like Brooke Gladstone his co-host better)

S-Town (just finished chapter 2 - as good as the first Serial in my opinion)

Better, in my opinion--and I loved the first season of Serial. I just finished S-Town today, and I'll be thinking about it for a long time.

Almost all of the podcasts I listen to are focused on true crime (and there are some really great ones in that genre), but lately I've been enjoying With Friends Like These, hosted by political writer Ana Marie Cox, who is funny, sharp, and passionate. She features people she doesn't agree with, which can make for interesting conversation. Pod Save America, hosted by four former Obama staffers, seems good too, but I've only listened to one episode so far.

WNYC has a great selection of podcasts. On The Media is my favorite, but there's lots of good stuff.

In the Dark is a crime podcast about a child abduction that is quite good in the serial vein

Sooo Many White Guys is interesting

Two Dope Queens is supposed to be quite good, though I've only listened to bits and pieces.

You might try some of the Gimlet media podcasts. https://gimletmedia.com The first season of Start Up is excellent. Reply All is consistently good. The rest for me have not become must-listens, but YMMV.

I like to listen the Slate podcasts (Political, Culture, and Double-X), but there are several more.

Pop Culture Happy Hour

Download the NPR One app--you'll have access to most NPR podcasts and more, and it's easier to deal with then subscribing to things on iTunes. Though not everything is on there (I can't yet find s-town).

All -- thanks so much for all these suggestions. I still have to read through all the commentary and recos. I'll check out some of these and comment. I'd love to keep the thread going. Many of the podcasts noted are favorite shows I've listened to on WNYC for over a decade. I listen a lot less to the radio now because there's more SCROTUS news than I can handle and still maintain my sanity.

I listen to lots of podcasts, and I love many of them. My current favorite is The New Yorker Radio Hour.

Here is part of my list:

The Daily (NY Times)

Snap Judgment (WNYC)

Indivisible (WNYC)

This American Life (WBEZ)

Radiolab (WNYC)

The New Yorker Radio Hour (The New Yorker & WNYC)

On Being (PRX)

Note to Self (WNYC)

Freakonomics Radio (WNYC)

2 Dope Queens (WNYC)

Home of the Brave (independent, I think)

The Moth

I listen to a number of "mindfulness" and meditation podcasts. If anyone should be interested, let me know and I will post some leads.

I'd love some titles--I'm trying to take up meditation, and a podcast might be a big help!

Mauras,

I get my podcasts through an android app called Pocket Casts. From there I did a search for Tara Brach, Jack Kornfield, and Joseph Goldstein. Each of those have regular podcasts which are downloaded automatically. I believe that they may be available through iTunes as well, not 100% sure. Additional talks, etc. can be found on the Insight Timer app.

There is a smartphone app called Calm which guides you through meditation. It is really pretty amazing. The concept sounds stupidly hokey, but it isn't.

Btw, I have a few of these Bluetooth speakers scattered around the house. Great sound, great price.

I believe it was last week's Time magazine that did a 2-page spread on podcasts.

as always, i highly recommend Hardcore History by Dan Carlin. Sublime.

I like and often fall asleep to Tara Brach. For the train, I like Headspace (an app, not a podcast.)

And for podcast fun, I like the way Dan Savage thinks much of the time, both on Blabbermouth and Savage Lovecast.

The only podcast I listen to regularly is the Slate Political Gabfest, which someone mentioned above.

For those of you who like true crime, I highly recommend you search the archives of the 'You Must Remember This' podcast for the series of episodes --about a dozen-ish, I believe-- about Charles Manson. Very, very good. (The podcast as a whole is not a true crime show. It's about the history of the Golden Age of Hollywood.)

The New York Times is starting a Facebook podcast club for discussion. You can see previous recommendations here.

The Intercept has terrific podcasts;   https://theintercept.com/podca...

Great resources here. Thanks. I joined the NYT Facebook group.

Two more recos - for history buffs:

The History of English Podcast

Medieval Death Trip

I thought I'd update this thread as it's been awhile.  Here's the ones that I've ended up listening to pretty much every week (or as they come out).  I listen to most of the NPR stuff suggested above on WNYC radio, rather than podcast.  I haven't discovered any new stuff in quite some time.

News in Slow French

Insight Hour with Joseph Goldstein

Here's The Thing

Plant Power Podcast

Shrink Rap Radio

The History of English Podcast

The Venture

Waking Up with Sam Harris

But if you listen to WNYC radio and not the podcasts you are listening live then? Podcasts allow much more flexibility and if there's any cursing it stays.

I didn't see you mention On the Media my must listen to for brilliant up to date political and other topics' analysis. And for feel good stuff afterwards there's the Moth.

I'm still avoiding listening to politics.  I do get updates on Brian Lehrer and Leonard Lopate segments on my podcast player and cherry pick what I want listen to.  Otherwise, I switch on the radio, but I'm definitely getting out of the habit.

I forgot to mention On Being. That's a WNYC regular show that I now listen to on podcast.  Fresh Air as well.
