No Trains to Penn

ml1 said:
get used to it. Congress is openly hostile to funding for mass transit infrastructure improvements. We can certainly blame NJT for its dreadful communication this week. But the power failures and stalled trains were all the result of unreliable Amtrak infrastructure.
We live in an era where our country can't do the most basic stuff that virtually every other developed nation does as a matter of course.

Absolutely true. This is one of the key issues that a new President/Congress must address. Our country cannot be competitive without state of the art, reliable roads, airports, rail, bridges, tunnels, etc. We have neglected this for far too long while spending our money on wars in foreign lands.

How are trains running this PM rush? I have to be in the city tomorrow morning and I'm thinking maybe I should drive. I cannot reschedule, nor can I be late.

I have to admit it is frustrating to arrive at work late after a hellish commute only to have no one to complain to because they're all 20 somethings who don't get into work until 9:30/10:00..... Even when I'm late, I'm early.

Oh, the retort I used to get was "nobody asked you to live in NJ".

I never got that but with the guilt I felt showing up almost two hours late this morning, I'm sure I read that thought in their minds. Same guilt I feel on snow days when the rest of the office is in. Luckily today's delays made local news..but still no one cares.

Hey ML1, Yup, I totally know what you mean. Complaining to the conductor does not help, nor does complaining to NJ Transit - they need better support and financing. But I don't think that means we should throw our hands up and accept the daily sh**show. Are we that beaten down that we just roll over and ask for another beating? I'd just say this: If you are frustrated and thinking about venting online here at MOL, on Facebook, wherever... consider instead writing an email to one of our representives. It takes the same amount of time and while it may be just as futile, there is still the off chance that somebody will pay attention - especially if enough people do it. I say we organize a protest outside Christie's HQ in Morristown!

First off, misterpeepers and anyone else interested, here's NJ's leading rail commuter advocacy group.

http://www.nj-arp.org/

The Lackawanna Coalition is a little too focused on our lines, but they're always looking out for the riders.

Christie has set the destruction of NJ Transit in motion. In his all out effort to have the worst transit record of any Governor, subsidies have been cut from $320 million to $33 million since he took office. Limited revenue sources that could soon expire have attempted to plug the hole. Worst of all, capital funds are being diverted to operating expenses. Fare hike plus not keeeping the system in good repair has always lead to a death spiral. We've seen this movie before, and the Transit Authority is almost done repairing the systemwide destruction the exact same fiscal idiocy set in motion.

And yes, America runs the very real possibility of no longer being a developed nation in terms of infrastructure, which I think would bump us out of the club entirely. Nationally the American Society of Civil Engineers estimated in 2013 that $3.6 trillion must be spent by 2020 just to return our systems to a state of good repair. Of course our leaders have heeded the citizen's cries for action and responded accordingly.

The last rankings from 2 years ago had at #25, just ahead of Qatar. With the new FIFA approved soccer stadium built by slaves, they may have passed us. Maybe they're on to something?

The NY Times covered the recent delays, with a few good digs at Christie:

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/23/nyregion/new-jersey-transit-service-again-disrupted-by-electrical-problems.html

According to our conductor this morning (as we waiting for a broken amtrack train to get out of our gate), yesterday's problems were exacerbated by Amtrack. Once the power lines were fixed, amtrack prioritized their trains over NJT.

Amtrak owns and runs the infrastructure on the main line so Amtrak ALWAY prioritizes its trains over NJT. That is one of the fundamental issues.

Once again I am sitting here waiting for my train. Late to work and late getting home- every day this week. Is there something we can do to draw attention to this? Petition? Strike? Stop paying?

The bus is not a bad alternative. I learned that during Sandy.

dk50b - thank you for the info. Your posts are always so fascinating and well-informed, I enjoy that. NJ-ARP seems odd, in that it appears you must pay to join them in order to "add your voice." Seems like a deterrent to me. Lackawanna Coalition looks interesting but appears to be small (but it's not nothing, certainly). Other groups I've found are basically FB groups just venting and not actually doing anything.

If you are frustrated by the poor service of NJ Transit and the service cuts in PATH service, please consider taking a minute to call a representative. Let's speak out!

Corey Booker - 973 639 8700

Richard Codey - 973 535 5017

Donald Payne Jr. - 202 225 4160

Robert Menendez - 202 224 4744

Chris Christie (yes, he needs reminding)- 609 292 6000

misterpeepers, I had the same thought about NJARP. Can't hurt to contact them and see what can be done without paying for the privilege.

It's worth noting that both NJARP and the Lackawanna Coalition opposed ARC based on incorrect information on the costs and constructability of direct connections to Penn and Grand Central.

http://blog.nj.com/njv_paul_mulshine/2010/10/more_on_arc_the_association_of.html

http://www.northjersey.com/mobile/news/signs-of-life-stir-for-rail-tunnel-under-hudson-1.1093168

In particular, the Coalition's Joe Clift incorrectly insists that it's possible to send more trains into existing Penn.

In the thread on ARC's cancellation, I note that the state's entire transportation network is on the verge of collapse. The bankruptcy of the Transportation Trust Fund due to the gas tax not being increased in 26 years means all maintenance and construction on state roads is about to grind to a halt.

That's my long winded way of saying our state legislators need to hear we're alright with a gas tax hike. The alternative is the ruination of our state's economy.

They just announced wire problems again and 30 min delays. aargh!

Imagine the economic benefit of diverting half of our defense budget to rebuilding the infrastructure that supports and economy that allows us to spend huge amounts of defense in the first place.

According to the NY Times, the number of NJ-based commuters will nearly double by 2030 yet we can't get transportation options approved? There hasn't been a new trans-Hudson NJ crossing since 1962!

Downtown Hudson Tubes (PATH)
1909

Holland Tunnel
1927

Uptown Hudson Tubes (PATH)
1908

North River Tunnels (Amtrak and NJT)
1910

Lincoln Tunnel
1937 (Center Tube)
1945 (North Tube)
1957 (South Tube)

George Washington Bridge
1931 (Upper Level)
1962 (Lower Level)

I can't wait to come back from Europe (high speed trains!!!!) to resume my NYC commute!

This is sort of the icing on the cake of a horrible commuting week.

Every time I think he's told the biggest whopper of a lie he can possibly tell, he ups the ante.

Ugh - he is so completely the WORST.

This is disheartening as you contemplate your coming work week -- NJT already anticipates problems for tomorrow's rush, with this alert sent this afternoon:

NJT rail passes/tickets will be cross-honored by NJT and private carrier buses, PATH at 33rd, Hoboken Terminal and Newark Penn Station and NY Waterway at South Ferry in Hoboken on Monday, July 27th due to ongoing Amtrak overhead power problems.

http://www.politico.com/story/2015/07/chris-christie-new-jersey-tunnel-cancelled-120560.html

He said, "If I am president of the United States, I call a meeting between the
president, my secretary of transportation, the governor of New York, and
the governor of New Jersey and say, ‘Listen if we are all in this Even
Steven, if we are all going to put in an equal share then let’s go build
these tunnels under the Hudson River,'" he said in a taped interview
with Larry Kudlow that will air on WABC on Saturday."

But unless I'm missing something, even including the projected overruns, something like 88% of the cost was covered by the Feds, the Port Authority and the Turnpike Authority. Christie's brilliant idea would have NJ taxpayers paying an even bigger share -- 1/3 -- than in the original plan.

Sounds like he's extorting the NJ/NY region...
