NO Starbucks in Maplewood Center! BOYCOTT!

I'm naming my next band "Homogony"

I probably won't patronize Starbucks in the Village very much given the other great options for coffee and sweets, but I would not characterize that as a boycott, and I have no issue with the company giving it a go at the site.  But I do thank the OP for offering a great band name, "Corporate Death Coffee".  smile

Both too good. Who needs Rickles?

R.I.P. Don.

.... when I think about a coffee in MPl Village. First choice is Able Baker.

Pro: Good coffee. couple'a large tables to sit around. Fair eats --- fair, because they frequently run out.

Con: Small tables outside are not that stable. Parking. Guy smoking a cigar.

Palmers.  Good coffee, good sweets.

Con: parking and too few tables. (Not their fault because of space.)

Village Coffee: Easiest parking of the three.  Good coffee. Bagles.

Future Starbucks.  O.K. coffee.  Food offerings, Meh. (I do like the shortbread cookies)  My best possibility of going there will be evenings when the other three are closed. I get Starbucks coffee about once a month...mostly on the Parkway or Thruway.

Side issue --- what I don't get is why people will sometimes be spending 20 and even 30 minutes, waiting in line at the mile 74 Parkway Starbucks on weekends.

A lot of us relied on that store when it was located on rte. 22 in Union and still miss it deeply.  We need a good hardware/housewares store like that in the Village. (There used to be two on Maplewood Avenue and one on Springfield Avenue)  Unfortunately, Home Depot seems to have driven off all but a few of remaining independent stores of that ilk.

Well played.

Secondly,  do I lose my right to comment and dissent because of where I live ?. Must I live a half a mile away from the "Friends of Donald Trump building" before I can take pen in hand or Dell Computer on life support before I can comment?  I did not such know that such a rule exists any where but in those who would limit democracy,

Something I think about every time you mention that a real estate agent lives out of town.

You say bagle, I say bagel.

Starbucks can have whatever size or configuration it wants in tables.   I spent much time in SoOrange Starbucks or in Montclair Starbucks or even Hershery Pa Starbucks seeking refuge from a storm.  I never saw anything even approaching a coporate meeting in any of them

It is open till 10 yes but who will be drinking coffee at that hour.  As for their deserts in plastic containers..........I will pass

I didn't say corporate meeting,  but I have certainly seen a group of adults planning a fun run, couples meeting with their wedding planner, a web contractor meeting a client. If you have an at home business Starbuck is a great place to meet with clients.

Ha!

"Outed as one who overlooks the sight."? First of all I made mention many times of where I live "overlooking the sight".   No one outed me......I was always perfectly honest about the location.

Of course you have a right to comment and dissent.   But, if I remember correctly, you and others in opposition posted on MOL for a while  in opposition to the PO project without disclosing your connections to each other and without disclosing your location.   You were under no obligation to disclose , but you may have had more credibility if you had done so .  If I remember correctly it was others on MOL who first brought the connections to light.  If you doubt that, then check out the original  Dickens Village or Transit Village thread and those that followed.

Nice of you to set the conditions for Free Speech under which you would be comfortable.  Frankly it was so long ago and memory fades but a number of independent of each other and some knowing each other gravitated together to combat the common problem.  It was John Harvey who called us together for the first time and the organization Engage was born.  John wrote the Manifesto  "Transit Village ",  which was ignored by the TC.   Subsequently we held at least half a dozen Village wide meetings.

Frankly what I can not understand , is how we could draw 40 store owners or more to a meeting.  Here them voice their opinion  opposing the new building and then when the vote was held by the Village Alliance experience a unanimous hands up in favor of the building,   Of course the vote was unanimous on the part of the Planning Board also and what would you expect from the TC.  A unanimous vote on the part of all three

boards given the conflict in town,  is just about impossible.   Only Mr. Profetta had the integrity to vote no

and resign from the Village Alliance , a group he help found many years ago

I heard the Village Alliance bought a 12 feet long pair of scissors for the ribbon cutting,  Maybe JMF will pay   for them for a change

What happened??.  I think those against the project never gained enough public support to stop it. People saw through the innuendo accusations and general baloney. I guess the idea of a public living room a block away from The Woodland, or a park next to Ricalton Square or a fencing academy didn't catch on.   It also didn't help that the main organizers behind the opposition were outed  as one who had submitted a failed bid to design the project and someone who lives in an apartment ovetlooking the site.  It might have helped if they had had a better relationship with the truth.

Do you really think it is a coincidence that the drawing the Mayor showed us many years ago of the new building is the exact thing that is rising now.   We could have come up with the most creative and useful concept of a building to be placed there.   But that was never in the cards,  never under consideration.

What he showed you years ago,  is what you got. Put your naivete away.  It serves no purpose now

It's a unicorn frappuccino, fwiw... I don't frequent Starbucks and I do not care for their brewed coffee at all, but I would drink their cappuccino every day if it weren't so expensive... Mmmmm, cappuccino...

You say Clarus, I say CLANUS.

Did they use Simcity to design that building?

it's been pointed out to you that this is an untrue statement.  And yet you continue to make it. Why do you persist in spreading this lie?

I hate Starbucks coffee.  I think that it is terrible.  And I hate the idea of such a large corporation in the center of town where there are so many great places to get coffee including the train station!(so I hear...).  So I, too, am upset about that.  I will not be buying anything there that is for sure.

Simply because it is not a lie.  If you were at the first two meetings at the Burghdorf,  tell me what the

sketches which Vic showed the audience looked like.  Now look at building we got

Above is a cold cappuccino served me by my friend Panayotta at her desert and coffee shop on the island.

Drank lots of coffee that year.

you're the one who has been saying the original drawings had a supermarket space for Kings partially below ground level.  That's not identical to what's being built now.

At this point, it is a lie.  Because you know it isn't true, and you keep repeating it.

No......I offer eye witness report.   The rest is lost in the fog.  Show me what Vic offered us and I will show you the same thing on Maplewood Ave

and I don't even understand the purpose of repeating that claim.  is it supposed to suggest some nefarious plot that the building now looks more like the first drawing than the second or third iterations?

I think it means that Author, like Trump, like an obsessed dog, just can't let go of this bone.

Now,  as to actively boycotting Starbucks,  I think that those who are sensitive to what goes into the Village  need not bother.  Does anyone know how many coffee to go Village Coffee vends per day.  Try over 200 which translates to over 1000 a week.  And we are not talking about the other established vendors.  Yes, some will try Starbucks main brand but statistics have shown that most go back to their original coffee or beer or what have you.   I am saying that the market just is not there for a successful Starbucks.                    Two years and out........next generation of stores arrives

90% of statistics cited on message boards are made up
