+1
Maybe fold in seniors under a broader Healthcare and Caregiving category, as most discussions regarding seniors seem to fall in that category
I think it depends what you want to achieve - organize existing content or to try and develop new conversations and bring in new people - Parenting might do the latter

One? In no particular order. You pick...
Seniors (because I'm sure as hell not arguing with any of those in favor of it )
Automotive
Separate Food and Travel
Community news and events
Lost and Found
There is already a lost and found" section.
Parenting/kid stuff for sure. Some school political-type things may still relate to Soapbox
Also I wonder if "DIY: Home Fix-It" would be more aptly named just Home? Often people post looking for solutions that are not DIY, including recommendations for who to call.
Love the idea of town/community events too!
Recipes, such as "what are you cooking tonight"
Healthy Lifestyle, such as "what exercises did you do today", or "what did you do for your health today"
Thanks for asking, Jamie.

Senior issues extend way beyond issues of Healthcare and Caregiving.
What about a category for Emergency Alerts (initial explanation only)? Each post (one per emergency) would be required to include a link to a separate thread for discussion purposes. The companion discussion thread could float based on interest while posts to the emergency alert category could remain at the top of the discussion page while the emergency was in force.

+1 on the Lost category, but specifically dogs and cats. We have no system in place in SOMA other than random posts. I've even raised the issue in South Orange Town Hall meetings and it has been discussed in Maplewood Town Hall.
People, we DO have a Lost and Found category already (as well as a pet and animals) No need to add what we already have.
Personally I read MOL in the "recently updated" view and really don't even notice what catagories posts are listed in.

Community Events. There really is no best place to post information on such activities as Rent Party, Maplewoodstock, 4th of July Celebration, Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony, Mayfest, Ideas Festival, Halloween Parade, etc.
I like this and would add town alerts. Community Events and Town Alerts.
(although it would be better for residents to sign up for alerts on the Maplewood Township website. Don't know what SO does.)
Also like Healthcare category (for medical recommendations, questions, input, healthy eating...)
To clarify: I was thinking of a fun/leisure/consumer tips type retirees category, UNrelated to health concerns, caregiving, tax issues, Medicare/Social Security, and the like.
You know what else would be nice? A Good News category, to counteract the relentless stream of bad news that the media bombards us with!

Same here, plus categories are invisible (or nearly so) on the phone. The only time I pay attention to them at all is when I'm starting a new thread and have to assign it to a category. However, I do understand the desire of some to be able to block certain categories.
Several existing categories seem to be underused. Finance and Millburn, for example, could be eliminated and that could give room for more than one new category.

Wine Pairings would be a very good category.
personally, its more interesting to me than a Milburn section...but I'm speaking only for myself.
There's no limit - but we have a good number at the moment - I wouldn't want to add too many at once. Will probably add a couple in the next day or so. We'll also be able to do sub-categories at some point as well.
For now - community events are promoted on the homepage and calendar links. At some point - we'll have a better calendar/community event module that will be better incorporated into the platform.
Thanks for everyone's input - stay tuned.
can there be a category called Purgatory for those who have been banned?
Promote your business here - Businesses get highlighted throughout the site and you can add a deal.
