at least Apple is free. A bit of a pain in the neck if a person has an older TV though. And IIRC, it's MLB that sold out the Friday games to Apple, not the individual clubs. So I don't think the Yanks have a choice.

If the announcers are as good as they were with the Mets, just sit out on the porch with a radio and a beer, and you will be better off.

John Sterling? I would agree if Howie Rose was doing the game. I'm not a fan of Randazzo.

I'll take the Apple announcers over Sterling any time.

I'm no Sterling fan, but those apple guys are really awful.  Oh well, not my problem anyway.  I'm listening to the Mets right now.

The Phils seemed to be going out of their way to prove Keith right last night.

Yanks beaten again.  Wow.  And it must be embarrassing for a guy like Canha to pop out against a position player.

Nah — last weekend, when they kept games close with solid fielding and good baserunning, was going out their way. A Phillies fan’s only hope is that they squeak into the playoffs and then go out of their way for a few games.

Seven and eight runs for the Mets speak for themselves, but batting orders that are five-ninths Matt Vierling, a desperation CF (either or Brandon Marsh or Bradley Zimmer), a rookie shortstop, a punchless Castellanos and a Harper-size hole aren’t scaring anybody.

Yes, the Phillies didn't look like much against a bullpen game for the Mets.  I did find it funny that the Mets have a former gold glove backup shortstop and he completely chunked his only play.

That position player happened to be throwing harder than Ruf. In any case, there’s a chance that Schwarber’s triple in the nightcap embarrassed Canha more.

That nightcap was an odd game.  The Phillies starter was good, but after getting to Nola and Wheeler I'm not sure that he was THAT good.  But it was also strange that it wasn't 8-1 by the 7th. They had the bases loaded the whole game against Mets pitching.

17 or something PAs with runners in scoring position, but I’ll take it.

Yep.  A win is a win.

Back atcha.

Watched the Mets take the Phils. Beautifully called game.  Exciting and well played too.

The Yankee broadcast, otoh, made me want to vomit in my mouth.

That was a great game.  Easy for me to say, of course, but a great game.

Alas, I remain unmoved from Aug. 13.

Other than the result, tonight’s Phillies-Mets duel was my kind of game.

Poaching from the other thread:

A real back breaker for the Phillies, and the braves lost, too.

I’m thinking not a back breaker. If they were contending for the NL East title, sure. But the Phils just need to make the playoffs, and they remain in a good position to do so. MLB playoff history is full of examples of teams beating opponents who had absolutely owned them in the regular season. I’m not worried that the Phillies, if healthy and lucky enough to meet the Mets again, won’t be able to put this behind them.

I'm watching the kids cast now.on ESPN2. The youngsters are 100 times better than the Yankees announcers.

That's a fair point.  Any team that is good enough to make the post season can win a series.  That's why I want the Mets to get the first round bye, and also why I won't jump off of a cliff if the Mets don't win it all.  I want them to make the playoffs every year with the new owner, but after that its a crap shoot.

Unfortunately, it’s not as fair a point as this one: The Mets’ 14-5 season advantage leaves no question who the better team is.

The Mets took 10 of 11 games against the Dodgers during the 1988 regular season.  It did not foretell the playoff results.

Tonight and tomorrow's games against the Yankees should be fun to watch. Scherzer tonight and deGrom tomorrow, if I recall.

Orel Hershiser didn't pitch every night during the regular season.

This is why the playoffs can be so much fun.  Usually every team can claim three very good starters.  The Mets have had unbelievable success against Nola this year, but I hope they don't see him in the playoffs.

Out of curiosity I looked it up and he started only one of those 11 games, going the distance but losing 2-1.

The thing I can’t stand about Michael Kay isn’t just that he’s utterly talentless, or that even after 30 years he still knows practically nothing about baseball, or that he is physically repulsive and always sounds like he just had a big lunch or that he regularly badmouths his own team on that crap radio show he has.  It’s that he’s arrogant to boot.

I was being facetious because it only seemed like Hershiser pitched every game in the LCS. But he did pitch in 4 games in the series.  And he got the big final out in pivotal game 4.

But he was a big difference maker that year. He pitched just over 42 innings in the postseason. Prime example for all the fans of teams like the Yankees of what can happen in a short series. Were the Mets and the A's "built for the postseason" in '88. They sure were. But the Dodgers beat them both.

Congrats to Maplewood's own Miguel Cervantes, lead role in Hamilton, on the singing of the National Anthem tonight. Great job! He's also my son's first baseball coach.
