Mask wearing by employees at take out restaurants and grocery stores

Went to pick up some pizza at a local place. Walked in, masks under chins and not over noses. I didn't want to confront the owner, but didn't want to eat the pizza either. So, I paid for it and sat there in the car and then threw it away. It's a small shop. If I confront the guy, he's just going to spit in my food. A no win situation. My takeaway, if you go to a place and see what I saw, back out and don't spend your money.

Report to the town health officer.

 Once you make the confrontation never eat there again. That is if you were planning to despite what you witnessed but did not address. 

I'm pretty sure I know the place you're talking about. Picked up a pizza a few nights ago and owner (I assume) had no mask or gloves on and the prep person also had no mask on. The only one with a mask was the girl taking phone orders.

Meh, it's on Springfield.  They have great pizza - we've gotten the pizza there once per week for the last few months and no one in our house has gotten the virus because of them.

Every pizza we've gotten for the last several months has gone in our oven at 170 for about 10 minutes before we eat it. 

(Actually we usually did that anyway for the hot pizza experience.)

Curious question: why does everyone assume restaurant owners/workers spit in their food with any disagreement? Do you really think they would risk their job/business like that?

 If you're a good customer, give them some friendly advice.

Personally, "he's never infected anybody before" is not reassurance that I would rely on.

We do 170 for 20 minutes for all that can be heated takeout, not just pizza. We don't buy cold takeout like Sushi or cold hero's considering there could be carelessness.

Evidence is pointing heavily towards airborne, not contact.  

My husband is a paramedic working in Bergen and Passaic counties, he has treated and transported too many confirmed positive cases to count.  He wears a mask whenever out in public.  Being in a truck for 12 hour shifts he basically lives on takeout.  He doesn’t take any special precautions with picking up food, no reheating (not an option in a truck anyway) no spraying down packaging with Lysol, no wiping down containers or bags with antibacterial wipes, nothing.

I also have not once wiped down or otherwise sanitized groceries.  Not once.

Though we both did have a bad cold last March, it seems that it was just a cold.  He has tested negative for antibodies more than once.  If catching this thing from contact with a food container were a real possibility he would have caught it awhile ago.

Wear a mask.  Try to remember that it’s supposed to cover your nose, not just your mouth.   Don’t go out if you don’t have to.  When you do go out remember to keep a distance between you and others.  And don’t sweat figuring out how to sanitize groceries and take out containers because even experts agree they’re a non-issue.

evidence is pointing at contact being a low risk, not impossible....being that only about 10% of people in NJ have had the virus it could that non of the food service workers were infected, not getting it from food contact does not prove it is impossible to catch it that way...just that it hasn't been confirmed to have happened. I'm not sanitizing food.  I let non perishables sit for a while in the bags before handling them, sanitizer my hands as soon as I pay at the check out....

 Mine was on Millburn Ave. in Millburn...such a bummer cuz I love their pizza. Never again. They were blatant about not wearing masks. 

It's not the surface contact that is the concern, it is projectile expectorating from saliva and sneezes and laughing and breathing and coughing. Masks can hold back some of that, but not all. When a pizza guy is preparing your pizza, he is naturally expectorating over your food. Woodwind players have to mask their instruments. It's not the surface contact so much as it is the flying droplets from your body.
