Mariah Carey - Epic Fail

I've always thought she was a complete diva and this performance pretty much sums it up. What a train wreck!

The commentary on Twitter was harsh:

I don't know what to think about it. I don't know what it is like to be up on stage and not have the monitors (speakers) work. I guess if you can't hear the music you can't really sing along to it.

I'm sure it was someone else's fault

...or pretend to sing along to it.

Monitors not working is someone else's fault.

In a venue like that it's incredibly difficult. She probably should have powered through. But then twitter would have blown up tearing her apart for being off key. It was no win for her.

Did any of the other performers have the same problem?

She did admit that they didn't complete a sound check so maybe the technical difficulties could've been resolved before the show. Maybe?

She could have told them to turn off the music and just sang the song. Think about how different the reaction to that would have been.

Without monitors? Still very difficult to do.

how do "technical difficulties" translate into not being able to walk without assistance?

does anyone actually believe she was planning on singing? She can't sing anymore. I am quite sure it was going to be a lip sync perfirncecso I'm not sure what you'd need to "hear". And after 25+ years in the biz, you'd think you'd have a backup plan regardless. She is a mess and will probably be an overdose story if she doesn't get help.

Just walk out on the stage an sing into a microphone. Would have given the tech guys time to sort out problems. I mean, she's not new at this.

She's also known for being super unprofessional. Her lateness is so chronic, it's a forgone conclusion. Her people are probably used to working on the fly with zero practice and sound checks but it may have been too much this time. Big stage, several moving parts, chaos everywhere, she was planning on lip syncing so she was probably drunk by midnight, it got away from them they couldn't pull it off. That it was the NYE celebration just makes it that much worse. However, she's Mariah, she's well loved I think she will overcome.

This. Don't get me wrong, I can't stand her or her music. But she has her fans and they are rabid in their devotion, so she'll be fine.

I used to work with a guy who loved her beyond all reason. He stated that if he ever had a daughter he would name her Mariah. Lo and behold, a few years later he did have a daughter, and yes, she is named Mariah.

I'll start by saying I'm no fan of Mariah Carey.

But how many of you folks sing in public? It's really hard to do. Especially when you can't hear yourself.

I can't fly a plane but I expect the guy the airline hired to pilot the jet to be able to do his job.

The woman may have exhibited some technical proficiency in her youth but as an entertainer she is utterly unqualified.

if the maintenance crew left the pilot with inoperable landing gear what would you expect?

I bet if she wore different shoes with less than a 3 foot heel she would have handled it better.

If her talent and professionalism were even half as big as her ego she would have handled it better.

We're not talking about landing a plane. We're talking about singing a frigging song. Children do it every day. I'll bet the audience would have joined in with her.

This comes to mind:

And then a hero comes along

With the strength to carry on

And you cast your fears aside

And you know you can survive

So when you feel like hope is gone

Look inside you and be strong

And you'll finally see the truth

That a hero lies in you

I guess that's just talk.

Exactly

She screwed up New Year's Eve but she gave us a wildly joyful Christmas song! Its the first day of 2017 so turn up the volume and dance!

new classic Christmas song...

We shouldn't even be talking about her singing, it was her lip synching that failed.

Next year, if they are again looking for some tired old has been to perform, I suggest they hire Milli Vanilli. At least those guys were professionals.

As a father who named his son with a nod to one of his favorite baseball players,* I say good for him.

* No, the name isn't Seven.

She literally couldn't walk in them without calling people over to lean on. Mariah's voice was incredible- love her music or not, there's no denying that. It's also the kind of voice that was never going to last forever. She's struggling mightily with that sad fact. After 25+ years as a star and performer, she certainly could have handled herself better and more professionally.

I'll add that my mother was of the teacher aides in her cosmetology class in high school on LI. Even then her ego, huge and her intellectual power, small.
