Maplewood Democratic Committee Seeks Submissions From Those Interested in the Party's Endorsement for Township Committee

the numbers tell us that only a handful of unaffiliated voters actually do that

It is still an option available to them should they choose to expand on their voice in the election process.  We also don't know how many independents in Maplewood chose to register as Democrats only because the Democratic party is the one that holds the most frequent primaries.

People should know that if they wish to be unaffiliated but want to vote in a party primary, they can declare themselves as a Democrat or Republican (or any other party) at the polls on Election Day. However, if they wish to go back to being unaffiliated after the election, they must re-register as unaffiliated (or not a member of any party) after the election. The forms can be found online, and submitted at the Township Clerk or County Clerk's Office.

My son used to do that when he lived at home, and voted at the Municipal Building.  He declared at the check-in desk on primary day, voted, then walked over to the clerk's office for the "change registration" form to go back to "unaffiliated".
