Local party venues for Sweet 16? archived

I know some places will not rent out for sweet 16s, but I am looking for someplace if the guest list means the house will not work.

So far I know of:
The SO Elks on Prospect
The Tennis Club (but I heard they do not rent for sweet 16s).

Any other local venues? I am open to a restaurant as well but I am guessing 100 people and that might end up being too $$$ at a restaurant.
How about the DeHart Community Center.

Do you know how much that costs?

We have used that when my kids were younger but there will be some adults (probably about 30 family members) and I do not believe you can serve alcohol there.

DeHart is very inexpensive.

I think the VFW Hall in Maplewood rents out, at least the did a few years ago.

I'm just wondering because my house is too small for family parties for my son, the recent re-eval shows that we only have 750sq ft of living space. By only inviting Aunts, Uncles, etc, we've been able to cut our guest list to about 28, which is waaaay too many for our tiny house. His first birthday we had here, and luckily the weather was good so a lot of people ended up in the back yard. This year we had it at hubby's sister's house, but that was a haul for everyone.

I can see spending some money for a sweet 16, but for a toddlers party I think spending too much is just a waste, so I am looking for inexpensive alternatives that don't require most of the family driving close to an hour to get to.

Try Giorgios. My kid went to a coupleBat Mitzvahs there and it was nice for the kids. I know you like the restaurant and seem to be frequent customers so maybe you could work something out. I imagine if you want to do it at night it would be more expensive, but I think they have a party room upstairs.

I was thinking about there, but not sure we want to do Italian food. I also asked Suzy (of Suzy Ques) and she basically said we could take over the restaurant (a holiday weekend) but we didn't go so far as to discuss pricing.

Spont, call the rec. dept. From what I recall it was really inexpensive for 3 or 4 hours, and after one house party where we spent $300 for plumbing issues, well worth it! I did combined parties for my kids when they were younger and the room is big, they have a kitchen, etc.

Dehart is great. We used it for my son's carnival birthday when he was 5 but I am thinking of using it for his 13th birthday coming up. I think it's around $175 for 4 hours. The parking is great, easy to get to and I like having access to a complete kitchen with a pass-thru window opening.

shh, I'll ask around. Is Montclair too far?

Why not try the Wyoming Club in Millburn on Linden Street. My DD has been to a few sweet sixteens there and has had a a lot of fun.

Trinity, I would prefer MSO/Millburn but would look into Montclair if the space/price was right.

Jzgirl, not familiar with it at all but I will look into it. Thx.

Casa Colombo in Millburn has a hall and a bar I think it's around 500$ or 600$

My daughter attended a very nice one at the Rock Spring Club right off of Northfield Avenue in West Orange. I honestly don't think the birthday girl's parents were members. Maybe they used reciprocity or were sponsored by a member.

Does your daughter have a special interest?
Shake it up a bit and perhaps use a non-traditional venue. The Italian-American Civic Federation in Summit or a bowling alley or the HUGE space at NJFA (the fencing club in Maplewood) or Hat City Kitchen or SOPAC....

I always wanted to have a really cool party in a building still under construction. This wedding in a parking garage is amazing:

Oh yes...what about all the VFW spaces?

We used Casa Italiana in South Orange, near Seton Hall. I haven't been in the VFW hall here, but it seemed like that type of space. The price was very reasonable. You bring your own food/drink in, but they provided ice and I believe that they would also provide chafing dishes to keep food warm. (We just had pizzas, so didn't need that.) I'll have to look around for contact info.

Teanacious in Livingston Town Center apparently is often rented out as a party venue - could be a great space for a Sweet 16. http://livingston.patch.com/articles/customers-cool-off-at-teanacious#photo-197521

Sac, never heard of that and I live right there. Where is it?

KMK< we have a few ideas but the biggest thing will be the number of kids! Bowling alley would be great except she wants it to be more formal. I am thinking like a Hairspray or Grease thing.

I read this as "local party venuses" and I was quite curious as to the nature of your party.

Shh,
For scale, check out the NJ Fencing Alliance space. It is huge and has a great sound system.

KMK, where is that, on Burnett?

Shh - Casa Italiana is on Fairview Ave.

OHHHHH...I never knew what the heck that was! Who rents it out? Location would be ideal.

Yes.

Site is under construction it appears because the phone number is nowhere to be seen!
This is it: (973) 762-7229

The phone number for Casa Italiana is (973) 761-5752.

The Elks is a great option for under 100 people. The only hook is that you have to use their soda/bar, but set-up and clean up are on you. I was there last night where they had a band, and have been there at karoke parties, and their monthly rent parties. I beleive it's less expensive than most halls of similar size, and they have a big parking lot in the back.

SHH

Here is the contact information for the Wyoming club- I do not believe it is that expensive and you can have a band or dj (which based on my dd experience).

When is this party? I might have a few reco's for you but don't want to post them here since they are private venues

Laura, not until Memorial Day weekend, just planning ahead. I was going to talk to you after you settle in.

100 is a lot for a restaurant...true. Above has a beautiful room but I think it seats about 60 max. We had my daughter's last year at Mosaico on Route 22 in Mountainside, which was lovely, but also only seats around 60. Martinis has a big room and it just might be big enough, not sure.

Re Casa Italiana - I had never heard of it either but a friend told me about it. It is owned by an Italian-American social/cultural club that has or had some kind of ties to Seton Hall and is just a couple of blocks from the campus. I believe that they are a polling place for South Orange, so if you wanted to take a look on your own, you could pop in there the next time there is an election. It was a little hard to get my initial call returned, but once we connected and met with the fellow in charge it all worked out very well for us. It has been several years now (that birthday girl just turned 20), so I don't know what their current policies are but PM or FB me for more info if you wish.
