Traveling the end of August. Looking for something centrally and near major train stations as well. Have an eye on the Amba Hotel in Charring Cross that looks to fit the bill and is a four star. Any recommendations would be welcome. Not looking to break the bank, but not looking for a Best Western either
We went about 1 years ago and stayed at a Comfort Inn which was good and relatively inexpensive. Given the quality of the underground, you don't need to be near the train stations.
We stayed at the Mayfair which was about a ten minute walk to Buckingham Palace. There was an underground stop a block and a half away.
We stay a the Ritz. The suites are very nice as is the afternoon tea. Service is superb.

I haven’t stayed here myself, but if you’re flying into Heathrow, you can take the Heathrow Express to Paddington, then you’re a short walk from the Hilton London Metropole, which is a 4 star hotel near Edgware Road tube.
There are a few things you can do in advance that will make things cheaper. Buy your Heathrow Express tickets in advance. If you are traveling by train anywhere else in the country by train, you also buy reserved seats in advance too. someone more knowledgeable here will be able to expound on how to get the kind of Oystercard, which you’ll need for in-London transport on tubes and buses. Buses, if you know where you’re going, are the cheapest way to get around (other than walking, and you’ll want to do a lot of that). The public transport system is fantastic.
We stayed at the Amba Hotel in London two years ago and would highly recommend it. It is steps away from the train stations and walking distance to great restaurants, the Theater District, Buckingham Palace, Parliament, the Winston Churchill Museum, many stores, etc. The staff at the hotel was lovely and very helpful making suggestions and drawing maps. On our visit, the hotel upgraded us and the room was quite large and beautiful. With certain room categories, you receive free breakfast and a 2-3 hour cocktail hour each day. We really enjoyed this convenience and would definitely upgrade to make sure we had it next time we stayed. You definitely can’t go wrong going with Amba.
Highly recommend the Trafalgar St James. Very nice, right near the Charing Cross Tube station.
When in London, I prefer to stay in residential neighborhoods like South Kensington or Chelsea. South Ken Tube is close to both areas. Try 54 Queensgate, it's across from the side of the Natural History Museum, a few steps to the Royal Albert Hall, the V&A and Harrod's. If you feel like spending a little more money, The Kensington is down Queensgate even closer to South Ken tube. Enjoy London, but be sure and see residential London, not just touristy London.
