Homicide on Northfield Avenue archived

I would be surprised if there was a suspect at this time.

Several people have come forward with information about the people pictured in the surveillance video. Just because they're not sharing with the public, it does not mean that the police and the prosecutor's office are not on the case. They are working very hard to catch the murderer and we just need to let them do their job.

Yes...and I pray that is the case.

The Essex County Prosecutor has "nothing new to report," according to one local news source.

They will certainly catch the murderers.

I can't read that on my Droid because of the annoying ad that wont go away. Can someone copy and paste it here.

WEST ORANGE — Two weeks ago, a college freshman texted his mother from a friend’s house to tell her he was coming home.

Minutes later, amid a coming thunderstorm, Brendan Tevlin’s Jeep Liberty came to the intersection of Walker Road and Northfield Avenue along his five-mile route. About six shots rang out, according to neighbors. More than an hour later, and a mile to the east, the Jeep was found, with the 19 year old inside in the parking lot of an apartment building.

As investigators combed for evidence, outrage and sadness swept the across the Seton Hall Prep community for the 2013 graduate and his popular family. A $10,000 reward was offered through the county Crime Stoppers program – then was raised to $25,000.

Now two weeks later, the investigation is still active – and leads are being pursued, said Anthony Ambrose, the chief of detectives for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. But no motive has been made public, no suspects have yet been arrested.

Much public speculation has been made about what happened that night to the 19 year old man, who was variously described as a “model citizen” and a easygoing surfer and athlete.

Tevlin and a group of eight friends were hanging out that Wednesday night, playing video games at a West Orange house, leaving to get snacks at the 7-Eleven on Valley Street in South Orange, according to Jagger Garguilo, a friend who was among the group at the time. Tevlin got a Slurpee. A 7-Eleven employee confirmed three days after the killing that Essex County Prosecutor’s detectives had seized security footage. However, both that employee and Garguilo said there were no altercations at the store.

Tevlin and his friends returned to the West Orange house on Florence Place, where they had been playing video games and watching the College World Series. Three of the eight left at 11 p.m. due to the provisional-license curfew; when Tevlin departed just before midnight, he left four friends behind at the house, Garguilo said.

The shots were reported minutes before midnight at the Northfield-Walker intersection, said neighbors there. Ed Larsen and another neighbor who wished to remain anonymous for security reasons heard what they thought initially was a transformer exploding during the thunderstorm rumbling through the area at the time. Both looked through their windows and saw only darkness – but later saw the flashing lights of police cars, they said.

Surveillance footage from a doctor’s office about a third of a mile to the east on Northfield Avenue shows two males running on Northfield Avenue at 11:54 p.m. The camera faces west down Northfield across its intersection with Ridgeway Avenue, looking in the direction of the crime scene. Dr. Prakash Paragi, who owns the building, confirmed the prosecutor’s detectives took the footage from his security system.

Another two cameras, at the Delta Gas Station across that same intersection, were out of order at the time of the crime, according to employees there.

The Jeep Liberty was located after 1 a.m. at the Ron Jolyn Apartments, just under a mile to the east of the shooting scene, authorities said. News camera footage of the scene show the Jeep with smashed-out windows on the passenger side of the car.

Where Tevlin’s body was found in the car – and how many times he was shot, and the size of the bullets – remain undisclosed by the prosecutor’s office.

Tevlin’s death was immediately classified as “targeted,” due to the ferocity of the attack, said Ambrose, three days after the crime. But detectives maintain there is no threat to the public, even though they haven’t determined a motive for the homicide, the chief added. Detectives from the prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force have been in touch with Tevlin’s parents, Ambrose said.

Overflow crowd turns out for Brendan Tevlin funeral Brendan Tevlin had more than a 1,000 friends and family turn out for his funeral mass held at St. Philomena Church in Livingston. Tevlin was shot and killed in West Orange last week. (Video by Ed Murray/The Star-Ledger)

The $25,000 reward remains available to anyone with information leading to an arrest of the killer or killers, authorities said. The prosecutor’s tips line is (877) 847-7432.

Tevlin, the eldest of four children in his family, had more than 1,000 mourners at his funeral at St. Philomena Roman Catholic Church last week. His three younger siblings all eulogized him as a young man who lived by a motto of “Good vibes and easy living.”

The people packed into the pews prayed for the victim, the family – and for the detectives who are still searching for the killers.

"It's not supposed to be like this. The community is living in fear of senseless violence," the Rev. Brian Needles told the congregation during the homily. "It's just not supposed to be like this.”

From an article on a ribbon cutting at Turtle Back Zoo: The sheriff says they're making progress.

"Sheriff Armando Fontoura praised the security at Turtle Back Zoo saying, "This is the busiest location in the state of New Jersey. There is a zero percent crime rate: no vehicle break-ins or thefts. No purses stolen."

His mood turned somber as he mentioned the death of Brendan Tevlin of Livingston on June 25 at Walker Road and Northfield Avenue, a few blocks away from the zoo. "This young man's death was not a random act," said Fontoura. "We are making good progress on the case. ...You don't have to look over your shoulder...this is the safest neighborhood in New Jersey."

What's intriguing about this case is that the facts released by the county prosecutor's office so far ARE consistent with this killing being a stranger-on-stranger crime (as such as an attempted carjacking, etc.), yet the authorities are reiterating that this was a targeted killing, and that it was not a random act. I wonder what they know or suspect that they are not releasing to the public.

I believe it is the manner in which he was killed that suggests it was targeted. They know things that we do not and it will stay that way probably until they have the right suspect arrested. I have faith in everyone working on the case and hope we can send a little prayer or wish that it happens soon.

I really hope they figure it out and catch someone soon. This happened in my neighborhood and I go through that intersection nearly everyday. My heart aches for his family.

"Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray will hold a press conference at 3 p.m. Monday to announce the arrests in the slayings of Brendan Tevlin, a 19-year-old Livingston resident, and Chayanne Bond, a 17-year-old Irvington cheerleader."

Sounds like great news.

I admit I didn't read the news release before I posted. Edited my post.

So they have to wait to 3 to get their moment of glory rather than just releasing the info in a timely manner?

HOLY HELL they are related? This has to be a monster. GRRRRR

I hope this brings their family and friends some sort of closure or relief.

They said arrestS, so maybe they're not linked? But, then again, odd that they'd lump them together in one press conference. We shall find out.....damn, two young lives snuffed out because of one (or more) a$$hat(s) with a gun.

It could be two for both since the original stories about Bond indicated "they" forced her and her boyfriend to their knees and shot them in the head. The boyfriend survived.

What brave men. They murdered a charity volunteer and a cheerleader.

I would be very surprised if the two cases are related. I think the prosecutor's office just wants to hold one press conference instead of two.

It is annoying this delay in making an announcement. At the same time we can be grateful that hopefully the guilty have been caught and are on their way to being tried.

As I said of this case........."Justice may be slow but it is inevitable"

Does anyone know where the press conference can be viewed?

Try News 12 NJ.

John Klekamp, a reporter for News 12 NJ (@jklekamp) is tweeting from the news conference. According to other online news sources at least one arrest was made on July 9, another on July 18. Two of those arrested are teenagers. One is a convicted sex offender who is a suspect in the deaths of two men in Seattle. According to an NBCNew York reporter, the prosecutor says Tevlin's death was a result of a carjacking.
