Exactly, and time to stop calling them drones, even with 1st person view and programmable flight they're still RC toys with cameras.

not my fancy pics, :-D

I wish I could find the web post that showed a Red Tailed Hawk destroy a drone.

And I can get a plate or even a description of the car and have them questioned by police. Notsomuch with drones.

You wont even notice when a dude passing by in a car with google glass on his head records a video of you standing on the sidewalk... And trust me, his video will capture much more detail than a rc quadcopter hovering 50 ft above your head ... in the former, the person will have captured details of your face, etc, in the latter they will see a small human shaped dot on the ground...

I really don't like people propagating paranoia about a hobby that really does not have ill intent. You can use anything for malicious uses ... You can use a smart phone to spy on people, but most use them to communicate instead.. likewise, you can use an rc quadcopter to spy on people, but in reality most users of these are hobbyists just looking to have fun and learn electronics ... this is why we have a 'drone club' starting in Maplewood...

Continuing this sense of paranoia is pointless in a society that is moving to a more and more open model as social media sharing is becoming more and more prevent everywhere.....

Watch any of the many videos on youtube showing what the hobby really is about before making judgements in fear of being watched or something of that sort...

Now, a real military drone is different and has a different goal ... it is meant to attack, kill, destroy... an rc quadcopter is used by photographers to record beautiful videos at weddings, real estate brokers wanting to showcase a property, hobbyists just trying to have fun... Let's keep that separation clear

PS- my comments above are not directed at you @ctrzaska, but anyone who puts down this great hobby...

Hey Seaweed, no one is propagating paranoia here (and if I did, I apologized). The person with the drone was clearly people watching from above, and I did not appreciate that. Just like any other person who doesn't like to be stared at by strangers on the street. You need to take a chill pill, because not everyone is a gadget whore with disposable income and not many people are ready to accept all the new technology out there. What's cool to you, may not be cool to others. I simply posted this sighting wondering if someone else in the area saw the drone and wanted to chat about it. But of course I get a troll comment from you: "it's a UFO".

I agree with the others about getting a paint ball gun at the sighting of a drone. Now that would be a lot of fun IMHO.

If anyone is curious, this is similar to the drone I saw. See how intrusive it is when it's hovering and watching you from above?

I'm more worried about it watching through the second floor window of my house. WHich is, of course, entirely possible.

@NolNat, I've been called a gadget whore before, but this is the first time someone calls me a troll oh oh My ufo comment was not trolling.. UFO means unidentified flying object as this one was .... I'm sorry you consider the money I spend on my rc hobby as disposable income--I work very hard for that money and to me, my rc hobby is an educational experience so I guess I see it differently.. likewise, I would not consider another person is 'disposing' of their income if they spend it on garden supplies--because that is their hobby and brings value to their life as rc brings to mine..

Careful shooting with your paintball gun, you can shoot someone's eye out with those cheese

So long as your drone hobby doesn't interfere with my twine cannon hobby, I think we're cool.

merriam-webster.com appears to disagree with you.

drone
noun \ˈdrōn\
Definition of DRONE

3 an unmanned aircraft or ship guided by remote control or onboard computers.

I don't necessarily take issue with drone ownership, but why not fly it around the reservation where nobody will be bothered by it?

Because, let's face it, someone's going to be bothered by it.

Wow. So many worms. One little can.
:O

I figure this will be worth some passionate replies!

Well, that's the price you pay for the sweet pleasure of drone ownership.

It's a remote control helicopter with a camera on it. Some people like flying those things around for fun, like some people like going for a drive on a nice day with the top down and the sound system blaring their favorite tunes, or riding motorcycles. Or mowing or leafblowing before 9am on a Saturday.

Yes, those are also irritating. I don't care for crying babies or whining preschoolers either (except my own, they're just adorable).

Not having an adorable crying baby or whining preschooler, nor a motorcycle, nor a convertible, nor the will to do yard work before noon, nor a remote control anything (see my posts about FIOS set-top boxes and useless remotes), I can safely say that I'm surrounded by these annoying things and more constantly.

Not if they are wearing google glasses.

My drone will shoot paint balls right back

You're welcome.

Be careful on GPS jamming. Best to check if it disables cell phones and car GPS nearby even if you are trying to disable the drone GPS ... and by the way if the drone GPS is disabled it could result in it crashing and both you and the owner may be liable if an injury occurs.

As an aside, it is against the law:

http://www.fcc.gov/encyclopedia/jamming-cell-phones-and-gps-equipment-against-law

One can choose to use them but be prepared to pay the consequences if the feds catch you at it. Spectrum is a Federal asset, not a state or local asset, the violation is a federal offense and sole jurisdiction over all spectrum rests with the Federal Communications Commission.

Here is the FCC notice on the law and the penalties:
http://www.fcc.gov/document/warning-jammer-use-public-and-local-law-enforcement-illegal

The chart below is from the last link. Note the phrase: "...monetary penalties up to $122,500 for any single act, seizure of the illegal jammer and criminal sanctions including imprisonment."

I would not use them.

There's nothing annoying about a convertible.

Carry on.

There is if you're not the one enjoying it.

Takes them a decade to find people they are actively looking for even though they are probably ordering takeout with their sat-phone and have the cable bill in their own name. Doubt they will catch someone in the 30 seconds it takes to down some jack ass kid's toy helicopter.

True, but you have announced sites to buy them! So someone is watching that I assume. Many, but not all, toy drones are line of sight so the jack ass himself might see the jammer! I would be careful. If a lot of drone owners, sooner or late one will complain.
