Carjacking in Montrose

We've been here 5.5 years, and honestly if I didn't read MOL regularly I wouldn't even be aware of a lot of the crime. Meaning, it has never affected my daily life. Other than being generally smart after dark and locking the car, we don't think much of it.

My sister and I share a "joke," although we don't use it much anymore. When you get into your car without remembering to look in the backseat you say, "Hello, murderer." I look in my backseat as a routine, but should I forget I always welcome my intruder. surprised

Shoshana,
Summit actually has half the crime rate as SO.
Let me be honest and say that if after all these helpful posts you're still concerned about the level of street crime in South Orange, you may be better off in many other nearby towns with lower crime rate per capita than SO--like Summit, Union, Springfield, Berkeley Heights, Westfield, New Providence, Livingston, West Orange, Millburn, and even Maplewood. Hope it works out for you.

I should add that my post was based on 2013 crime stats (the last year for which NJ's annual UCR is available).

Bear in mind that the numbers fluctuate, sometimes significantly, from year to year. In 2014, SO's numbers dipped considerably while WO's spiked. But as of July 2015, SO has had almost as many violent crimes (23) as it had in all of 2014 (24). And Maplewood's numbers are at half of last year's (13 vs. 28).

At a municipal level, it only takes few individuals (just out of prison, moved into the area, etc.) to drive the numbers up. It also means the PDs' ability to catch these criminals has a significant impact on driving down the local numbers. This is where we should be thankful--Maplewood and SO PDs have a fairly high solve rate.

It may have more to do with your digging up a year-old thread and asking about crime in a way that a newbie might ask -- but you've already been on MOL for over a year.
Since 2012 under a different (now suspended) login.
Incorrect, I haven't been on MOL since 2012, and my questions were sincere and well-meaning.
I really like South Orange, and always felt comfortable visiting the town, which is why I was so surprised to see the red crime map.
I'm really sorry that the question brought up so much defensiveness.
I am really happy to hear that people feel safe and happy in South Orange - thank you to all that answered. South Orange has a great vibe - keep up the great work and community spirit! <img src=">

That's a shocking coincidence.

What is your point?

Are you trying to "shame" me?

How...welcoming...

My point is that you are being dishonest with everyone here.

What's your point?

I am not dishonest. I honestly don't remember being on MOL in 2012. Believe it or not, I actually have other things going on in life; I don't remember every event on Maplewood Online.

If my account was suspended, I certainly don't remember why.

If that is the case, it is probably (again, just probably, because these events are escaping me - but I sense you remember?) because I commented on some MOL poster's anti-Semitic drivel, and this was considered a personal attack and against MOL guidelines, or something ludicrous of this nature.

After all, I keep forgetting: commenting and protesting racism is to be commended.

But protesting or pointing out anti-Semitism? Not so much...

Well this thread took a turn.

Agreed. It's very unfortunate.

Some earlier posters made this personal (for some reason).

Can we get back to the Bartlett Crime Bill currently being pushed through after POTUS decided not to follow Sid's request?

Yeah that was my guess - West Wing.

BubbaTerp a West Wing fanboy?

Nah, I don't believe it.

Why do you say that? I still believe Dupont Circle should be declared a Federal Disaster area oh oh
