car talk

My field biologist daughter wants to get a toyota 4 runner 1996 w 170, 000 miles so she can get into off road areas out west (arizon/utah). Not a lot of wiggle room re the model / year. She found a local possibility and will have it checked out by a trusted mechanic and, if he gives it a go , will drive it out west. Several of our cars are in the + 150,000 mile category. Not sure I would be driving them cross country. your thoughts on the feasibilty of this exercise and making it as boring as possible re car re incidents ? having just finished reading The River of Doubt (great book w much insight re kermit roosevelt/ mw road) trying to idiot proof this adventure. thanks !

If it makes you feel any better, our Toyota Corolla has nearly 150k miles and (knock on wood) has never given us any trouble. I'd buy a used Toyota in a minute.

Today's vehicles should be good for 250 - 300 k miles.

If she is going off, off road I recommend an emergency signal beacon, approx $400. At R.E.I. It will save you both some sleepless nights.
