Cape May Accommodations for a long weekend in September?

As mentioned at some point upthread, walking/biking distance to the birding areas as well as the beach would be highly desirable (if that combination exists.)

The Jetty Motel and the Mount Vernon Motel are a long, pleasant walk down the beach from the bird sanctuary. I'm not sure when these motels close for the winter. Colton Court is another small motel on that end of the boardwalk. All three of these motels have pools and ample parking.

La Mer is not walking distance to the bird sanctuary or town. But, it's a large hotel that's right across the street from the beach. It has a pool, ample parking, elevators, and a great little restaurant next door.

Almost any place in downtown Cape May proper is within walking distance to the beach and bikeable to the birding areas. Also walkable to restaurants and outdoor pedestrian shopping mall. Of course "walkable" and "bikeable" are subjective and different for everyone. I've never had trouble with the distance to the birding areas by bike.

FYI, North Cape May is definitely not bikeable to the birding areas.

You could look at renting a house in Cape May Point for a few days. That's definitely within biking distance of the birding places. I know because my brother owns a house there and I went for the CMBO birding weekend last fall. Mostly, we biked to the locations. For example: http://www.vrbo.com/124651

Cape May Point is my favorite.

If you stay in Cape May Point, you are easily in walking distance to Sunset Beach (lots of Cape May diamonds, the sunset flag ceremony, a fun rock shop and a souvenir shop, the WWII lookout tower museum, the Cape May lighthouse and lots of good walking trails for birding/photography and the beach. But there aren't any nice restaurants that I'm aware of right in the area. For that, you'd have to drive - a short drive - or bike. I've never stayed here, but we visit it often and I love it. I've ruined more manicures looking for Cape May diamonds! I know they were talking about putting a mini-golf course in behind the souvenir shop, but I can't recall if they ever did so. There is a beach-food take-out restaurant at Sunset Beach (burgers/hot dogs/fries/ice cream).

A dear friend of ours was an avid fisherman, and he would rent a house in Cape May Point for 3 or 4 weeks every September. He said the fishing was great then, the water was at its warmest, and all of the kids were back in school. That was his favorite time of year because he could be there doing what he most liked to do.

That would be us, except substitute birding for fishing for my spouse and in-laws, and lounging around (and some birding) for me.  Spouse is still working full-time so we can't do 3-4 weeks, but maybe in a few years ...  (I work part-time 'from home' ... i.e. via WiFi, so as long as I can get online, I don't really have to worry about where I am when I have work to get done.)
