Bob Dylan is finally 70... archived

...although I thought he could be older...it was these two covers made me realize that he wrote some beautiful music...

and...

Forever Young. - Happy B'day, Bobby!

Metric system?
Dog years?

There must be a perfectly reasonable explanation. I thought he was 100.

Also invented the paper version of Twitter ...

I'm embarassed to say that I forgot to buy him a birthday card ...

maybe because youre getting old too..although you look a helluva lot better than Dylan

I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now...

Happy 70th Birthday, Bob Dylan.

It's not dark yet--even if it is getting there . . .

I must admit, I like other people performing his music more than when he performs it:

- Guns & Roses - Knockin on Heaven's Door
- Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
- The Byrds - Mr Tambourine Man
- Various - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall

How cool is Bob Dylan?

"Everybody knows by now that there's a gazillion books on me either out or coming out in the near future. So I'm encouraging anybody who's ever met me, heard me or even seen me, to get in on the action and scribble their own book. You never know, somebody might have a great book in them."

I am wishing Bob another 70 years.
I have seen Bob Dylan perform more than any other musician. (I'm just saying - I've seen Rush like 30 times).

Bob's music has been some of the most thought provoking good medicine that has come in to my life.

This is Bob 1975 covering Bob 1952.
This clip and this song is pizza - because it ALWAYS DELIVERS.

Want to celebrate with live music? Come to Highland Place on Saturday June 4 for a Bob Dylan Birthday Party. It'll be busting out with local musicians playing Dylan (and some Band) numbers. I'll be there, likely with the Almost Canadians. And if you want to play a few, whisper me, and I'll send out the word to the organizers.

another favorite Dylan cover...

70!!!! Wow!! That's OLD!!!.....Uh, wait....He's 22 days older than I am......(groan) Still, I cannot begin to express the influences his songs have had on my life. Thank you, Mr. Dylan, Sir! Happy Birthday!

this is awesome:

I am a lonesome hobo, without family or friends
Where another man's life might begin, that's exactly where mine ends.
I've tried my hand at robbery, blackmail and deceit,
And I've done time for everything 'cept begging on the street.

Once I was quite prosperous, there was nothing I did lack.
I had 14 karat gold in my mouth and silk upon my back.
But I did not trust my brother, I carried him to blame,
which led me to my fatal doom, to wander off in shame.

Kind ladies and kind gentlemen, soon I will be gone
but let me just warn you all before I do pass on,
Stay free from petty jealousies, live by no man's code,
and hold your judgment for yourself lest you wind up on this road.

Bob Dylan has the coolest birthday evah!!!!

I've only seen him in concert once. His voice - unique. His songs - poetic. But what I didn't get? Why he wore leather pants in July.

I love this thread--thanks HankZona. I can't think of anyone whose music on personal matters like love, death, friendship, etc. has meant more to me than Bob Dylan, with the possible exception of Neil Young, who notably in an act of humility has referred himself as a "B student of Bob Dylan". However, at the end of the day, what most matters to me is Dylan's public stance in the early 60's and 70s on issues of race, justice and peace. While he strongly fought being labeled as the "voice of his generation", his list of songs on these subjects is staggering: "Blowing in the Wind," "Times They are a Changing", "Masters of War", "Chimes of Freedom", "Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll", etc. When the time called for it, Dylan was there. I link below to his performance of three songs at the March on Washington (which is worth skimming through) and then to Peter Paul and Mary performing "Blowing in the Wind" at the Washington Peace March.

"Eternity?" said Frankie Lee, with a voice as cold as ice.

"Thats right" said Judas Priest, "Eternity, though you might call it Paradise".

"I dont call it anything" said Frankie Lee with a smile

"Alright" said Judas Priest, "I'll see you after awhile".

a bit of a different take on Dylan...

for Hoops...

Sam Cooke was embarrassed that Bob Dylan was addressing the plight of blacks in America more than he was...and was inspired to write the second song....

As much as I like Bob Dylan, I didn't recognize the song Hoops quoted until I tracked it down. The Dylan library is vast and filled with many treasures!

There is no one like Bob Dylan; a living, breathing American treasure. My sister once described Dylan as "a poet who sings." I believe Dylan has been covered by so many artists because, like me, they found something in his poetry. He put the painful, and triumphant, parts of being human into words.

Although many did not care for Roberta Flack's cover of "Just Like A Woman," I love it.

Interesting theory on why great singer/songwriters like Dylan, Joan Baez, John Lennon, Paul Simon are all about the same age (as are as younger folks such as Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder). Being 14-15 years old during key pivotal happenings in music. Who knows, maybe something there ...
