Install the Google Drive app on your Mac. It will create a folder called "Google Drive". Stuff under that is sync'd with the cloud. If you have stuff in Google Drive already, you'll see it on your Mac.
You'll have to figure out how to run regular backups from your music folders to that. Or move your music stuff there, and it will automatically sync.
Would I simply open Google Drive, click on "upload folder," and choose the iTunes folder (containing various subfolders)?

I don't personally use Google Drive, but I'm pretty sure it's just that simple, yes. I've moved various of my iTunes files in and out of Dropbox hundreds of times and it works just fine. I'm sure Google Drive will be the same.
That will only do it once. Better if it happens frequently without your intervention, right? You can move your itunes library to live under the Google Drive folder on your Mac. That latter folder is created when you install the app on your Mac. Download it here and install it.
Google Play Music lets you store 50,000 songs for free. It's not quite the same as just copying files as it does matching to determine if they already have the song and you can occasionally end up with a slightly different version (I think you can fix it by deleting and reuploading the song). So depending on exactly what your purposes are that may work for you. It's not quite as flexible as Google Drive would be as you don't have direct access to 'files' (you can download files, although there are some limits) but it's free and you can listen to your music anywhere once it's in there.

This is actually what I use as my cloud solution for my iTunes library, but I also pay the monthly fee for access to the Google Play Music library and assorted other features. I've been paying for it so long now that I couldn't recall if there was a free allotment for "uploading" your own tunes.

I have about 12 GB of music on my Mac, a combination of CD copies, iTunes purchases, and misc other. I use Google Photos to back up my pics. Can I use Google Drive to back up my music? (I do back up to an external drive, but I'd like to have a cloud backup, too.)
