Another fight at woman's club

if you're going to take your personal drama into a public space, you shouldn't be surprised or bent when people notice you taking your drama into a public space.

I assume the OP has zero interest in mediating the dispute on display or getting involved in whatever problems the people depicted have. It sounds like he had his own problem he's trying to deal with- problems with the women's club.

Sometimes a private word to a business owner is just the thing to get some relief from a nuisance. Sometimes it's a way to get ignored. The OP hasn't mentioned whether he's tried, but also keep in mind he is not obligated to do so. It's not his job to enforce noise ordinances or track down the people responsible for managing the establishment.

The people actually empowered to "do something" work in government. And as we know the squeaky wheel gets the grease. And by posting here, he may find other wheels who want to roll with him (please stop me before I simile again).

Overall a logical decision when you think about it.

South_Mountaineer........So you are calling this fistfight "some kind of argument" at a family gathering.   I've never heard that definition for a fistfight before.   What would you call it if it had erupted into a rumble ???   A family discussion?   And by the way, how do you know it's a "family gathering".   That's quite an assumption you are making.

This sounds like a scene from last night's episode of Ray Donovan.

OK perhaps I didn't word properly.

Let's change

"I think recording/posting stuff like this has the potential to shame people and have them think twice about engaging in inappropriate/antisocial/illegal behavior....like, fighting in the street."

to

"I think recording/posting stuff like this has the potential to make people think twice about engaging in inappropriate/antisocial/illegal behavior....like, fighting in the street."

Do you disagree with the reworded statement?

So you think people likely to engage in such behavior read MOL?

Why do you answer a question with a question?

The potential deterrence I refer to is a broad digital deterrence, on whose beach MOL is a grain of sand. A good local fisticuffs posted on YouTube, Facebook or twitter can easily make NJ.com, which has pretty good reach...just one example...

I guess I'm speaking (writing) from my own perspective, in a sense. I don't think I've been in a fight since about 5th grade, but who knows, there's always a chance a situation arises to maybe change that. I know if I was about to square off with someone and I realized one or more people had their phones out, that would make something that probably wasn't worth it, even less worth it in my mind.

I can't necessarily project that reasoning onto others, but in general I believe that the prospect of going viral is a deterrent. One of a number of reasons why filming public stuff is a positive byproduct of technology.

has anyone yet answered the question about how often this sort of thing occurs?

I have gone to at least half of the Rent Party events at the Woodland.  They stop promptly at eleven PM, and I have yet to see a good donnybrook., let alone loud argument.

I would like Smedley to quantify 'another' in order to take this seriously.

Hell, I was at a concert at Carnegie Hall where the left side of the orchestra level was pretty much emptied by a "donnybrook." And that was 1979/1980. It was awesome!

That reminds me: Sometime in the 1980's my family was at a classical music concert at Avery Fisher Hall. At some point we were asked to leave because my sister and I were getting over colds, and we were coughing too much. (No "donnybrook" though. I was happy to leave as a teen who had been brought for the purpose of experiencing 'culture')

In which case they didn't have to imply that there were more...

if you want to know "how many times" check the police records they have been called to 60 woodland for over 2 years now several times a month to control crowds that linger in the parking lot after a night of partying and drinking and sometimes to 1:00 am.  one night police cars where where there at 12:00 am searching a car and what looked like making an arrest after an fight broke out.

The rent party ends at 11:00 and everyone leaves peacefully and gone by 11:30 which is acceptable.  Other parties the music stops at 11:00 but moves to the parking lot and don't seem to ever end.

Perhaps the management of the Woodland should change policy and take steps to insure the parking lot is vacated promptly after events.

What do you think?

The irony is that neighbors of the Woodland refused to accept Tom Kerns' proposal for the Women's Club because they were worried about noise late at night.  I think Kerns would have managed the issue better than the Town, IMHO.

I would agree with this statement.

I suspect that at least a few of the neighbors hoped that their opposition would lead to the building being razed and replaced with something quiet like a law office or a couple of new homes.

no one wants the building razed

yes Tom Kerns who I respect and is well respected in our town and yes he would have done a much better job at controlling these type of events.  the issue was that the town was going to allow his events to run to midnight and on special occasions till 1:00 am when the noise ordinance is 11:00 am  that was the objection. the woman's club was a quite place for the most part with some events once in a while and did not have the through traffic and the amount of events that now take place.

Who would accept this type of change occurring in their back yard when it never was like this

the town stated that buying the woman's club would open 40 plus parking spaces for the town but when we had Maplewoodstock the parking lot was completely closed off because there was an event going on that had nothing to do with the town.

We where misled by what the woman's club would be used for.  back to the beginning of this discussion its a get venue for the arts and cultural events for the town not for late night drinking parties that go on forever into the night.
