Creatures in the news — winged, four-footed, cute or scary

My understanding is that the devils will eat the cats and, thus, save the songbird population. The devils are technically native to the mainland but they have been extinct  in that range for 3,000 years since humans introduced the dingo dog.  Could be there is more on the menu than just cats.

Don’t forget the devils are also fighting a horrid facial tumour disease which interferes with their ability to eat and see. More than 80% of adult devils have these facial tumours, except for certain small, controlled colonies which scientists are desperately trying to keep ‘clean’ so they can work out how to control the growths naturally.

There are some shocking pics in the paper. Don’t read if eating, or while kids are around!

One of the amazing remembrances of my travels in Australia and New Zealand were the sight of hundreds of cockatoos perched in trees in areas where tourists were sure to gather! At first glance, I could not believe that huge  gathering — and I know  lot about NYC pigeons, as well as their Italian counterparts in Venice!

Have you read about Wally the teeny lamb?  Very lucky to be alive, even if he can’t see over daffodils yet:

Joanne, you made my day! And,  jut when I had  started to believe the world was going to hell in a hand basket!

Thank you!

Was it abandoning Afghanistan…Haiti’s earthquake... Covid pandemic lockdown fears….or a combination of depressive world news? Reading this made me want to cry.

Your therapeutic dose of cuteness for today:

My goodness, those toenails look dangerous! And I bet you could get some great fingerprints/hand- or footprints off each individual, too.

Well, of course I’d love to own Big John, I just don’t know where I’d put him…

Who wants to own a triceratops?? Got a spare €2million?  wink

Years ago, a family friend lived in suburban Maryland, on 3acres of rocky, hilly land. He had goats as “gardeners for his property, too.

We had friends with goats, too: one goat loved walking all over the cars (I think she thought she was mountain-climbing! Ruined every visitor’s ducco, though), and another secretly thought she was a cat who lived inside the house…

Who else read about the ‘giant’ penguins with long legs? 1.4metres tall, so as tall as a schoolkid (4.5feet), that’s pretty impressive in a bird.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2021-09-17/giant-penguin-fossil-found-by-schoolkids-new-zealand/100467506

@mtierney, i thought you’d really enjoy this hopeful article about a niche fungi hunter fighting back from extinction:

All kinds of thinking about country horse races these days, especially where the communities are smaller and these occasions serve other socially binding and economic functions, too.
Still, it’s almost 170 years of tradition for the Wallabadah Cup races - and with recent droughts and flooding, modern safety standards mean the event is permanently off the calendar.  tongue rolleye  gulp

Thought we could all do with a positive news clip, for a change. And this is a beauty, combining man’s best friend, clever teamwork, neat use of tools and a competition:

Who cares that the human is 88, and uses a mobility scooter??? cheesecheese

When my husband and I were in New Zealand we watched a performance (best word)  by a dog corralling his herd in a pasture and leading them down a hillside, back to their enclosure. The farmer just whistled. Choreography by man and beast!

Numismatics - not sure where to place this wink It’s just so pretty, and about such as important issue: let’s save honey bees and collect AUD$2.00 coins at the same time!

Now this piece of research is truly fascinating: is the dingo a dog (ie domesticated) or not??

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/apr/23/scientists-find-dingoes-genetically-different-from-domestic-dogs-after-decoding-genome

Not a wolf, not a dog, something unique and to be treasured not feared. Wow! Even their digestive mysteries are different to dogs’. Test subject Sandy is so cute, I’d love to meet her cheese

Questions.  What is the center made of?  Does Australia have a coin similar to our Toonie? Is there a picture of the Queen on the other side?

The obverse has Her Majesty’s portrait by Jody Clark. I’m still trying to get more info on the coloured centre, because it’s so rich - the last coin  I recall with as rich as colour was green and cleverly enamelled but looked domed in certain lights.

Oh! These are cute coins too! @GoSlugs, I’m going to phone the Mint but can’t for an hour (they’re not open yet). I’ll edit  this post to let you know.
https://www.ramint.gov.au/sites/default/files/2022_mint_issue_mar_137_online.pdf

ETA: Allan from the Mint’s Coin Shop wasn’t much help, unfortunately, because he hasn’t seen the coin. The Shop is busy today, there’s no-one he could ask. He believes it’s been sculpted and jewellery-enamelled to create that stunning ‘drop of honey’ effect. I’ve been invited to phone back on Tuesday. (Monday is ANZAC Day, public holiday)

As I have a family with five hatchlings at my entry way, this caught my attention…

@mtierney - and others, of course - have you read about this cute new crab?

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-06-15/sponge-crab-species-lamarckdromia-beagle-discovered-off-wa/101151412
How clever that it tries to cover itself with a sponge as camouflage, from viewers from above!

Oh this is priceless! It follows the report, about a month ago, of a duck that received a medal for finishing a marathon (I think in the top 10-20 runners). The other runners were human.

I just love the humour in the names cheese
