Are you sure this is still true? It used to be that if a light was put up and had no DOT paperwork (and I'm told that many were) you could fight a ticket received for running that red light on the technicality that it was illegal. I believe @jerseyjack used this defense for more than a few employees who received red light tickets. But they got rid of that loophole in the 90's. I would assume that by making non-DOT lights enforceable they, by extension, were conceding that some towns were putting them up without permission, and if they hadn't been doing just that then the loophole wouldn't have been of use to anyone anyway.calliope said:
