ACA Health Insurance

from Robert Roe, Health Officer Maplewood:  I thought it will be helpful to start a thread in case people have missed the Calendar section about the ACA Health Insurance sign up that is being hosted at the Hilton Library.  The dates are Saturday Nov. 21, Dec. 5, Dec. 19, Jan 2, Jan. 16, Jan. 30 from 10:00am till noon.  Trained Navigators will help you with the sign up process.   Every week at the Health Dept. we calls from people needing health insurance, so now is the time to sign up.   You can also call the Oranges ACA Navigator Project at 973-500-6031 for additional sign up times at other locations.

Mr Roe  do you need to be a   Maplewood resident or are South Oranginas welcome ?

Any person in NJ is welcome.

Bump.   If you do not have health insurance, this is a good opportunity to sign up or to get answers to  question

Do we have to sign up for a slot at the Library or just drop in? (Sorry for all the questions!)

I believe it is first come first serve.

Bump.  Next sign up dates are Dec. 5, Dec. 19, Jan. 2, Jan 16, Jan. 30. 10am to noon.    If these dates and times do not work for you call 973-500-6031  x102.

Bump.   One problem that I see with many job situations is that employers, and understandably so,  want to avoid the high costs of providing health insurance.  So many employees are only hired part time.   This seems to be especially true for young adults.  Young adults also get sick and injured, so health insurance is needed for all people.

@robertroe, this is one major, major flaw of the ACA. It was well intended, but this is a huge unintended consequence. Maybe it could be solved with sliding scales, but to me, the obvious answer is Medicare for all.

Nearly all the job growth since the recession ended has been in full-time jobs. Part-time employment is pretty much flat.Obamacare hasn’t led to a shift from full-time employment to part-time.

But the evidence suggests it has led some employers to limit the hours of workers who were already part-time, effectively giving a pay cut to some of the most vulnerable Americans.

@mjh, I don't know about growth curves, but there are vast numbers of people who have part time jobs who would strongly prefer full time jobs. Many of them work several part time jobs, entitling them to far too little. I don't think this is defensible.

I'm not defending it at all.

That too many part-time jobs remain part-time (permanently) is a terrible thing.  That employers will not convert part-time positions to full-time positions because of the ACA is also a terrible thing.

However, it's also important to clarify that the ACA did not cause an overall increase in the number of part time jobs.

If you think you are going to have reasonably expensive surgery (say at least $10,000 maybe twice that much), how does it affect your plan choice?  I just can't get my mind around this stuff, between the premiums, the deductible the out of pocket max.   I hate this sh!t.

I think that this type of question by bub is what the Navigators might be able to help with or at least help with trying to find the answer to your question.  Next session is Dec. 19.

The next Affordable Health Care sign up day is at the Hilton Library on Dec. 19 10:00am till noon.
