I can see having another name, if you have a personal issue/concern and really need to keep it private, but for the most part, if I wouldn't say it to your face I won't post it either.

I can see one of these persons, when having a deeply personal issue they do not want to publicize to their friends wanting to use a new (and likely temporary) identity to ask for opinions, assistance, resources, etc. to help them work through the problem. Other than that, I really don't see what is to be gained by using more than one on-line identity on MOL.

This is my only screenname and lots of people know who I am. I have occasionally considered setting up another one for a personal "please help" type post but have never done so. I would hope that would be allowed if I felt I needed to do it.

I'll admit I have 2 screen names "HarleyQuinn" and "Poison Ivy" .. made the second account (recently) because sometimes HQ would be under fire and though it may need a recess.

I have never used any screen name but this one (my actual name), but in the early days of MOL I was accused of also being another poster by someone who thought that our views as expressed on the board were so similar that we could not possibly be two different people. So you need to be careful with the accusations.

A two-name poster once outed himself by posting an "as I said before"-type remark when the previous post had been under the other name. :shamed:

I'd use the MOL message board a lot more if everyone used -- their real name.

I have one screen name that I have posted under since 2005 because, well, who can be bothered with more than that. Agree with boomie. I like the intent of this thread, which is to make MOL a more agreeable little place. I agree that games are why a lot of people sit out MOL, or just lurk.

The irony, though, is that many people don't like MOL because of threads like this, which basically are threads about MOL. :smile:

I don't think the problem exists or is a big deal in all categories but I do think it's killing the South Orange Specific section of MOL. I'm just about ready to give up having an intelligent conversation about our Village on this forum and that makes me sad.

There was a psychologist in the midwest a few years ago who was arrested for charging insurance companies for group therapy, when he was really seeing individuals. His defense was that he specialized in working with multiple personalities, and he treated each multiple as a group. Creative, but guilty as charged.

Another vote in support of Fishy's request...I've been under one name the whole time. I might change it someday, but wouldn't dream of creating multiple names to create pretend friends to agree with my ideas, etc. That is amazingly lame.

I did once create a second log-in to use to discuss personal issues, but in the end decided not to use it, because the combination of my writing style and the question I wanted to ask might not have been completely anonymous even under a different name!

So, I guess my thought is this...if you want to have two names for two different types of site usage (i.e. the playful/obnoxious and the serious), fine with me. But they don't belong on the same thread, talking as if you were two participants in the thread. One identity per topic please!

Perhaps, in discussions when people surreptitiously use multiple screen names to bolster an argument our MOL gods (Dave and Jamie) can "out" them.

I wholeheartedly agree with this statement. I don't understand why the tone of the discussions has turned so nasty. It's as if a gang of childish bullies wants this to be their own private playground.
